The Director, Office of Academic Computing provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for teams that support the computing, programming, and data infrastructure serving cutting-edge research initiatives within the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital.

This role oversees the delivery of database services, computing platforms, application systems, and technical support for diverse research groups. The Director manages staff and financial resources, guides infrastructure planning, and recommends capital investments to ensure scalable, secure, and high-performance research computing environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide phone and on-site support for system and desktop software for all OAC clients and the research community.
  • Develop and maintain a local area network of computer systems as part of the ISD and University computer network. Approve all computer, peripheral, network, hardware, and software purchases for the OAC.
  • Recommend capital purchases for research related computing needs.
  • Compose computing facilities of grant and center applications and renewals, utilizing existing OAC or ISD resources whenever possible.
  • Direct application development in all areas needed for Department of Psychiatry research and academic administration.
  • Develop and administer MySQL/Server in the OAC client/server system, including replicated data, computer, security, reliability, functionality and performance tuning.
  • Supervise the daily backup of all shared computer systems and provide plans for the security of personal computers.
  • Provide secure and effective database services and computing platforms for statistical, graphical, client/server data management, data analytical, and communication services to the OAC and related research groups.
  • Perform hiring, termination, and day-to-day supervision of computer facilities staff. Coordinate, designate, and supervise the responsibilities of the system analysts, system managers, application programmers, and systems computer operators. Provide training for the personnel necessary to keep the computer systems and network software functioning successfully.
  • Consult on ISD planning and development projects with relevant individuals at UPMC and Pitt.


  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related discipline. 
  • 7-10 years experience supervising data processing personnel in a research environment. 
  • Extensive knowledge of computer systems and network design. 
  • Knowledge and extensive experience with high level programming languages, software engineering, and modular, object-oriented algorithm design are required. 
  • Knowledge of client/server database management systems and real time programming is essential.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34 with renewal
