Part-Time On-site Student Research Assistant - Office of Research 

Please note that only currently enrolled students in RMU’s PhD program are eligible for the position. In addition to hourly pay, this position will be granted a 50% tuition break for the duration of employment with the University.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS 

Position Supervised by: Director & Lab Manager OR


POSITION PURPOSE 

The Research Assistant (RA) for the Office of Research (OR) is supervised by the Director of the OR and works under the direction of the Research Operations Manager of the OR. This person will work part-time (20 hours) on-site and assist with student and faculty research, including but not limited to equipment training, lab-based data collection, SOP development, troubleshooting lab equipment, and documentation for any lab-based study activities.  This position may also include secondary work in the BSL2 lab at the discretion of the Research Operations Manager. 

Additionally, this position will assist with projects and activities in the Office of Research and it's on-site lab. The research assistant will help with equipment maintenance, training, inventory, and management. The RA assists in responsive email communication with students/faculty, and administrative tasks. Self-management and prioritized decision-making are essential for planning, prioritizing, and organizing a diversified workload. The incumbent must maintain a professional and productive demeanor and work effectively as part of a collaborative team. Desire and willingness to further enhance skills in BSL2 and software skills are important for long-term success in this position. The OR acknowledges that team members may have non-RMU commitments; however, these should not interfere with position responsibilities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Provide support to faculty and students conducting research within the OR HMR lab.
  1. Provide primary support to students and faculty by responding to email submissions
  1. Inventory, maintain, troubleshoot, and otherwise manage all equipment within the OR HMR lab
  1. Provide support to include developing SOPs for new research projects. 
  1. Assist with administrative tasks using the Microsoft 365 platform.
  1. Attend weekly OR meetings. 
  1. Manage time and department responsibilities with non-RMU work commitments.
  1. Performing other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the OR.

                  Health, Medical, and Rehabilitation Laboratory

  1. Perform equipment maintenance for Moxy, K5, VO2, Tobii, ECG, and other lab equipment. 
  1. Assist with faculty and student training required for equipmentutilization. 
  1. Maintain and organize documents pertaining toall labequipment. 


 PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS 

1. Annual institution performance evaluation based on goal achievement, completion of duties, and core competencies/skills 

 

 WORKING REQUIREMENTS/CONDITIONS 

Required Knowledge: 

Use of Microsoft Office, G Suite, Adobe, Teams, and SharePoint. Familiarity with research regulations and research design. 

Experience Required: 

Prior relevant experience in an academic or healthcare setting or familiarity with working in a higher education environment. 

Skills/Abilities: 

  • Technically proficient with the abilitytoself-teachand use new technology
  • Responsible, timely, detail-oriented, and organized 
  • Takes initiative and can work well with limited supervision
  • Excellent grammar and editing skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills 
  • Technology skills (or willingness to quickly learn):
  • Qualtrics. 
  • Microsoft Suite thatincludes:Excel, Word, Outlook,Sharepoint, and Interweb
  • Zoom and Teams technology
  • Enjoyscreating and improving workflow processes. 
  • Skilled with cell culture, tissue staining, agarose gel, andqPCR .
  • Growth-mindset with desire and willingness to develop additional skills. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills 
  • Able to create and improve processes
