The Engine Shop Supervisor leads the daily operations of the engine repair shop, overseeing a team of diesel technicians performing diagnostics, repair, overhaul, and rebuild work on Caterpillar engines. This is a working supervisor role: the right person is comfortable on the floor solving difficult engine problems and equally capable of managing workflow, holding the team to quality and safety standards, and keeping jobs moving on time and on budget. Success is measured by shop throughput, repair quality, technician development, and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day shop operations, including job assignment, scheduling, and prioritization to maximize technician productivity and meet customer deadlines.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and act as the shop's escalation point for complex diagnostics and repairs across CAT engine platforms (e.g., C7, C9, C13, C15, C18, and 3500 series).
  • Oversee engine teardown, inspection, in-frame and out-of-frame overhauls, top-end rebuilds, and component replacement to CAT specifications.
  • Review and approve diagnostic findings, repair plans, and parts orders; ensure proper use of CAT ET, SIS, and applicable service literature.
  • Enforce quality control standards through job inspections and sign-offs, minimizing comebacks and warranty exposure.
  • Champion shop safety: ensure compliance with OSHA and company policies, conduct safety talks, and maintain a clean, organized, hazard-free work environment.
  • Mentor, train, and develop technicians at all skill levels; conduct performance feedback and support career progression.
  • Monitor labor hours, efficiency/recovery rates, and job profitability; identify and correct bottlenecks.
  • Coordinate with the parts department, service writers/advisors, and customers to communicate job status, timelines, and additional repair needs.
  • Manage warranty documentation and ensure repairs are completed in line with CAT and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain shop tooling and equipment, recommending purchases and repairs as needed.

5+ years of hands-on diesel engine repair experience, with demonstrated expertise on Caterpillar engines (dealer or industrial service shop environment strongly preferred).

  • 2+ years in a lead technician, foreman, or supervisory capacity managing a shop team.
  • Proven diagnostic ability on electronically controlled diesel engines, including familiarity with CAT ET and SIS.
  • Strong working knowledge of engine overhaul procedures, specifications, and torque/clearance standards.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and hold a team accountable while staying technically engaged on the floor.
  • Solid organizational and communication skills; comfortable interfacing with technicians, parts, service, and customers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational diesel certification or CAT factory training a plus
  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Training & Development
