Reports To: Director of Nursing

Position Summary: 

The MDS Coordinator is responsible for managing the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) process, including completion, accuracy, and timely submission of MDS assessments in accordance with CMS regulations. This role ensures interdisciplinary communication, supports Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, and promotes quality resident care.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Schedule and coordinate completion of MDS assessments within regulatory timelines.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to ensure accuracy of assessments.
  • Review and validate MDS data before submission to state database.
  • Monitor RUG scores and ensure appropriate reimbursement.
  • Provide training to staff involved in MDS completion and documentation.
  • Coordinate with billing department regarding assessment codes and reimbursement processes.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives through MDS data analysis.

Skills & Competencies 

  • Knowledge of MDS/RAI process and CMS reimbursement guidelines.
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary staff and communicate effectively.
  • Proficiency in EHR and MDS software systems.

Required: 

  • RN or LPN license in Michigan without restrictions.
  • Experience in MDS coordination or similar nursing leadership role.

Preferred: 

  • Certification in MDS or advanced training in reimbursement systems.

Physical & Work Requirements 

  • Prolonged computer work and facility rounds.
  • Ability to respond to emergent resident care situations as needed.
