About the role
Cognizant is seeking an experienced AS/400 (IBM i) Application Engineer to support and enhance enterprise‑scale systems. The role involves designing, developing, and maintaining applications using RPGLE, CLLE, DB2/400, and AS/400 utilities, while working closely with cross‑functional teams in a hybrid work environment. In this role, you will:
·      Design, develop, and implement robust AS/400 (IBM i) solutions to improve system performance, reliability, and scalability.
·      Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure seamless integration of CLLE and RPGLE applications.
·      Analyse, tune, and optimize DB2/400 databases to enhance data retrieval, integrity, and storage efficiency.
·      Develop and maintain CLP scripts to automate routine operational tasks and streamline system processes.
·      Create, modify, and maintain applications using AS/400 RPG/RPGLE in alignment with business requirements.
·      Provide technical support and troubleshooting for AS/400 systems to minimize downtime and ensure continuity of operations.
·      Document system architecture, technical designs, and operational procedures to support knowledge transfer and future enhancements.
·      Conduct code reviews and provide feedback to ensure adherence to coding standards, best practices, and quality guidelines.
·      Participate in project planning, estimation, and execution to ensure timely and cost‑effective delivery.
·      Stay current with emerging IBM i / AS/400 technologies and industry trends to drive continuous improvement.
·      Communicate effectively with technical and business stakeholders to gather requirements and provide status updates.
·      Ensure compliance with Cognizant policies, security standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
·      Mentor junior team members and contribute to a collaborative, learning‑focused team environment.
Work model: Hybrid.

What you need to have to be considered:
·      7+ years of Strong hands‑on experience with AS/400 (IBM i) technologies, including AS/400 Utilities, CLLE, RPGLE, DB2/400, CLP, and RPG.
·      Proven experience designing and implementing complex technical solutions in an enterprise environment.
·      Proficiency in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
·      Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities with high attention to detail.
·      Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team‑based, hybrid work model.
·      Strong organizational and time‑management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
·      Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

These will help you stand out:
·      Hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.
·      Experience working in regulated or large‑scale enterprise environments.
·      Prior experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers.
·      Familiarity with modern modernization or integration initiatives on IBM i platforms.

Salary and compensation:
The annual salary for this position will be between $60,000 to $93,000 depending on the experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program and stock awards, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
