Summary of Position: In collaboration with the Center Manager and teaching team, the Lead Teacher creates an environment to reflect the cultural values and diversity of the children and families served. S/he provides consistent, responsive and respectful care to the children as a primary caregiver (teacher), and is also responsible for the safety, care, supervision, and development of all children in the classroom. The Lead Teacher develops and is responsible for the implementation of lesson plans and classroom activities, as well as ongoing monitoring of the environment and interactions in the classroom. The Lead Teacher is a role model and mentor for staff, parents, and children. S/he shares information about child development, best practices, and encourages family engagement in the classroom and center. Â Â |
Primary Responsibilities Include:Â - Plan and implement age and developmentally appropriate curriculum for children, including daily open-ended activities to expand their competencies across developmental domains, submit written lesson plans to the Center manager
- Maintain appropriate teacher – child ratios, ensuring visual supervision of children at all timesÂ
- Develop and maintain a safe, healthy, nurturing, and culturally relevant classroom environment for all children and families
- Understand and follow Wu Yee policies and procedures to ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with licensing requirements, Head Start performance standards, and California Department of Education regulations
- Maintain regular and timely communication with program staff, including, but not limited to the Center Manager, Associate Teacher, and Family Advocates to facilitate effective program performance
- Ensure documentation of all significant contacts with families and maintain up-to-date file records including attendance, emergency contact information, family contact, education data, and file log for your classroom
- Accurately and promptly complete formal observations, ongoing screening, and assessments of children in your primary care according to the service area timelineÂ
- Oversee formal observations, ongoing screening, and assessments for your classroomÂ
- Develop and maintain portfolios that document the unique strengths, skills, and areas of growth for the children in your primary care on a regular basis
- Review portfolios for your classroom to ensure they are completed to accurately document children’s strengths, skills, and areas of growth
- Maintain ongoing, open communication with families and conduct parent-teacher conferences and home visits for children in your primary care
- Maintain appropriate active supervision of children in your care at all timesÂ
- Support children’s 2.6 transition plan and children’s transition to Preschool/Head Start
- Support Children’s Potty-training
- Provide guidance and support for Associate Teachers in conducting parent-teacher conferences and home visits, ensuring program requirements are met for your classroom
- Conduct regular classroom monitoring, using formal tools to evaluate the environment and child-teacher interactions
- Implement and follow-up on action plans for ongoing program improvement
- Review child assessment data and understand school readiness goals to adapt the classroom environment and lesson plans to increase skill-building opportunities for children in your classroomÂ
- Provide professional feedback to Associate Teachers and volunteers for ongoing reflection and development of teaching skills
- Encourage and promote families’ participation in center activities, field trips, special events, and the Family Committee and Policy Council; provide orientations for parent and community volunteers, as needed
- Participate in the referral process for children with suspected disabilities, as needed Â
- Ensure children with special needs and/or suspected delay receive individualized care and classroom modifications; escalate concerns to the Center Manager and Multi-disciplinary team
- Work with program staff to ensure IFSP/IEP goals are supported through integration in lesson plans and classroom routines; provide guidance to teaching staff and volunteers for meeting individual needs
- Collaborate with program staff, the Family Advocate and Mental Health Consultant about concerns or issues related to a child’s development
- Have an understanding of the Program for Infant Toddler Caregiving and Creative Curriculum for Infants/Toddlers, and Twos.Â
- Perform Daily Health Checks for children entering the center; monitor that Daily Health Checks are being conducted appropriately for your classroom
- Ensure children are signed in and out of the center appropriately; oversee sign-in/out sheets for accuracy before submission to the Center Manager
- Conduct safety check in the park/playground to ensure the equipment and area is safe for children, prior to the commencement of outdoor activity; ensure safety checks are being done appropriately by Associate Teachers
- Model and teach children appropriate health and hygiene practices, including tooth brushing, potty training, hand washing, etc.
- Ensure proper preparation of the classroom for meals and nap time
- Participate in food preparation for the center in accordance with program policies and procedures and state food safety requirements
- Participate in family style eating with the children
- Ensure meal counts are recorded accurately at the time of service and before submission to the Center Manager
- Follow established teaching staff health and safety procedures; including sanitizing classroom materialsÂ
- Clean and sanitize dishes, pots, pans and utensils daily according to Wu Yee policies and proceduresÂ
- Participate in the annual program Self-Assessment, as needed
- Provide input on school readiness goals, family engagement, and dual-language instruction to inform curriculum development program-wide
- Collaborate with the Center Manager on Professional Development Plans for the teaching team
- Engage in ongoing professional development activities, as required by the program
