Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Executive Director of Governance, the Governance Specialist Assistant performs work to support the AEDG related to training, consulting, and developing the Associated Students Board of Directors throughout their term as Board members. The GSA works closely with the AEDG to ensure certain elements of the Governance department are well managed, with specific attention to outreach, engagement, Board policy compliance management, and general Board support as needed. Acts as a liaison between Governance, the student body, and relevant Administration. Assists in the areas of policy analysis, grassroots organizing, and shared governance organizing and outreach.

   

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Performs, schedules, and/ or mediates ongoing Board trainings to develop civic engagement skills, grassroots organizing, policy comprehension, and yearly certifications (ex. Title IX). 
  • Envisions and organizes opportunities for Board outreach events, including tabling efforts, townhalls, open forums, etc. 
  • Provides support to the Board of Directors, namely the Chief of Staff, to ensure ongoing Board compliance with relevant policies including, but not limited to, the Duties and Expectations Policy, Attendance Policy, Outreach and Office Hours Policy, and all other applicable policies.   
  • Serves as a liaison and additional support for Lobby Corps to help mediate, schedule, advertise, and execute grassroots lobbying efforts consistent with the Board’s Legislative Agenda or stated positions on legislative proposals, bills, resolutions, etc. 
  • Serves as a point person to maintain open lines of communication between the Board and the campus community, including soliciting feedback from the student body and maintaining campus relations with various departments (ex. campus Government & Community Relations, IEEC, UCorp, Foundation Board, Mashouf Wellness Center, etc.) 
  • Accompanies and assists Board members and Lobby Corps members in advocacy efforts throughout the term; includes travel to the California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS) and lobbying efforts as needed. 
  • Assists the Elections Commissioner with organizing year-round outreach efforts to educate students on the Board of Directors and the opportunity to serve on the Board.
  • Supports the AEDG in ensuring the publication of agendas/ minutes is timely and in compliance with AS policies to aid in organizational transparency in accordance with the law 
  • Works closely with the staff of the Executive Office on consistent improvement of materials and resources available to the Board throughout their tenure, including training manuals, templates, attendance records, etc.
  • Monitors systems to ensure such policies and principles are followed by the Board of Directors, and in compliance with all local, State and Federal laws. 
  • Assists the AEDG in developing operating policies and procedures as they relate to Governance operations. 



Qualifications:   

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, policy & procedures related to assigned activities
  • Thorough understanding and literacy analyzing and understanding legislative policies, proposals, bills, etc. 
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of public policy 
  • Provide unbiased council for the benefit of the organization 
  • Ability to negotiate and work with a variety of working styles and personalities
  • Flexibility and patience to teach applicable skills on an ongoing basis 
  • Ability to remain professional in emotionally charged or high pressure situations 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, especially via email
