A. POSITION PURPOSE

The Sound Engineer mentor is responsible for the training of student sound engineers to technical execution, maintenance, and real-time operation of audio systems to ensure a high-quality audience experience. By balancing artistic intent with technical precision, this role ensures all auditory elements—including vocals, instrumentation, and sound effects—are delivered with clarity, consistency, and emotional impact.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. System Setup and Configuration

  • Mentor students on the preparation and configuration of soundboards, playback systems, amplifiers, and speakers to establish a foundational audio infrastructure for performances.

  • Mentor students on deploying and securing microphones on performers and throughout the venue to ensure comprehensive sound capture.

  • Mentor students on conducting sound checks and level verification to identify and resolve equipment malfunctions before production begins.

2. Mixing and Cue Execution

  • Mentor students on Operating digital and analog mixing consoles during live rehearsals and performances to achieve a balanced acoustic environment.

  • Mentor students on how to adjust vocals, instruments, and playback in real time to compensate for performer dynamics and varying audience conditions.

  • Mentor students on how to Execute programmed sound cues with high precision to maintain the pacing and emotional arc of the production.

3. Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Mentor students on how to perform routine repairs and maintenance on microphones, wireless systems, and speakers to ensure long-term reliability.

  • Mentor students on how to diagnose and resolve technical failures under high-pressure live conditions to prevent performance interruptions.

  • Mentor students on how to maintain an organized and safe workspace for the sound team to facilitate efficient workflow and equipment longevity.

4. Other duties as assigned.

  • Mentor students on how to collaborate with the Sound Designer and Director to implement the artistic vision.

  • Mentor students on how to coordinate with lighting and projection departments where technical systems intersect.

C. PROVIDES WORK DIRECTION

  • Provides coordination and technical support to student sound teams and stage management.

  • Offers guidance to other technical departments (Lighting, Projections) during cross-departmental integration.

D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve audio quality and services.

  • Identifies and determines cause of equipment problems; develops recommendations for improved maintenance practices.

  • Maximizes productivity through use of specialized playback software and planned performance initiatives.

  • Prepares progress reports and informs the Sound Designer or Supervisor of project status and technical deviations.

E. QUALIFICATIONS

1. Knowledge

  • Comprehensive understanding of acoustics, signal flow, and sound system design.

  • In-depth knowledge of microphone types, wireless frequency coordination, and amplification.

  • Familiarity with theatrical playback software and recording techniques.

2. Skills

  • Proficiency in operating both digital and analog mixing consoles.

  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for complex audio signal chains.

  • Strong communication and collaborative teamwork skills.

3. Abilities

  • Ability to remain calm and resolve technical issues under intense pressure.

  • Ability to synchronize audio cues with live action and visual effects.

  • Ability to maintain focus for extended periods during live performances.

4. Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre, sound engineering, music technology, or  related field, preferred. 

5. Years of Experience

  • 3 years proven experience in live sound reinforcement, preferably in a theatrical or performing arts setting, required.

F. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy audio equipment, including speakers and cable trunks.

  • Capability to climb ladders or work in elevated catwalks to hang and aim equipment.

  • Considerable time spent standing at a mixing console during long rehearsals and performances.

  • Manual dexterity required for wiring, soldering, and rigging small microphone components.

G. WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Theatrical venue environment with fluctuating noise levels.

  • Working in darkened areas with frequent interruptions and high-pressure cues.

  • Potential exposure to heights (catwalks) and confined spaces (equipment racks/booths).

  • Schedule involves evening and weekend hours consistent with performance cycles.
