Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

Who We AreĀ

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth.Ā We'reĀ working to do that by making access to space cheaper and more reliable through reusable launch vehicles. Join our team of problem solvers as we add our next generation of launch vehicles and in-space systems to our fleet.Ā

The RoleĀ

We are seeking a MechanicalĀ Design Engineer to join ourĀ team. The core challenge is achieving rotational performance at a scale andĀ speedĀ that has not beenĀ demonstratedĀ before.Ā

This is a hands-onĀ detailedĀ design role built for someone who thrives in rapidĀ development cycles. You willĀ design, build, test, learn, andĀ redesign — repeat. Success is measuredĀ by hardware on the test standĀ andĀ data in hand, not byĀ documents alone.Ā

ResponsibilitiesĀ

  • OwnĀ detailedĀ mechanicalĀ design of a high-speedĀ rotor assembly including structural members, retention features, balance provisions, andĀ thermal management.Ā

  • Develop andĀ iterate thermal management solutionsĀ

  • UnderstandĀ thermal andĀ structural loads on the rotor; translate those intoĀ design requirements andĀ geometry constraintsĀ

  • AuthorĀ drawings, GD&T, assembly procedures, andĀ acceptance criteria with sufficient rigor to buildĀ andĀ test hardware quicklyĀ

  • Define andĀ execute component- andĀ system-level test plans; be present for test operations, teardowns, andĀ inspectionĀ

  • Drive rapidĀ design-build-test cycles — identifyĀ failure modes early, propose trades, andĀ execute changes fastĀ

  • Coordinate with manufacturing andĀ supply chain to produce hardware on aggressive schedulesĀ andĀ ratesĀ without sacrificing structural or thermal integrityĀ

  • Participate in failure investigations andĀ contribute to root cause analysis andĀ corrective actionĀ

Basic QualificationsĀ

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or closely relatedĀ fieldĀ

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanicalĀ design of rotating machineryĀ Ā

  • DemonstratedĀ understanding of rotor structural mechanics, including centrifugal loading, retentionĀ design, andĀ fit/preloadĀ strategies for components with thermal sensitivityĀ

  • ProficiencyĀ with 3DĀ CADĀ (CREO, NX,Ā CATIA, SolidWorks, or equivalent) andĀ drawing/GD&T per ASME Y14.5Ā

  • Experience authoring andĀ executing hardware test plans andĀ participatingĀ hands-on in test operationsĀ

  • ExperienceĀ withĀ design for manufacturing andĀ design to cost.Ā

  • Comfortable with fast iteration:Ā designing to 80%, building hardware, learning fromĀ data, andĀ rapidly incorporating findingsĀ

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admittedĀ into the U.S. as a refugee or grantedĀ asylumĀ

PreferredĀ QualificationsĀ

  • ExperienceĀ designing integratedĀ cooling features within rotating assemblies — internal flow passages, thermal interfaces, or conduction paths under rotationĀ

  • FamiliarityĀ with highĀ andĀ low-cycleĀ fatigue andĀ fracture mechanics for rotating componentsĀ operatingĀ at high peripheral velocitiesĀ

  • Experience with composite or advancedĀ alloy materials in high-stress rotating environmentsĀ

  • BackgroundĀ in rapidĀ hardwareĀ development programs with shortĀ design-build-test cycles andĀ frequentĀ design updatesĀ

  • RotordynamicsĀ experience — critical speedĀ analysis, unbalance response, bearing loadĀ estimationĀ
