JOB OVERVIEW


The Bus Person supports the front-of-house team in the hotel’s full-service restaurant by keeping the dining room clean, stocked, and guest-ready from opening through close. Working closely with servers, hosts, the culinary team, and stewarding, this position clears and resets tables promptly, attends to guests between courses, and helps deliver a polished, seamless dining experience for hotel guests and local diners that reflects the hotel’s service standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Greet guests warmly and provide water, bread, and coffee/tea service in accordance with the restaurant’s steps of service.
  • Assist servers by running food and beverages to tables, using correct table and seat numbers for accurate delivery.
  • Clear plates, glassware, and flatware between courses using proper clearing techniques once all guests at the table have finished.
  • Crumb tables and reset (“mark”) flatware and tableware for each subsequent course to maintain a polished table throughout the meal.
  • Refill beverages and respond promptly to guest requests, relaying special requests, allergies, feedback, or concerns to the server or manager.
  • Answer basic questions about the menu, outlet hours, and hotel amenities, and direct guests to the appropriate team member when needed.
  • Clear, sanitize, and reset tables quickly after each party departs to support efficient table turnover and minimize guest wait times.
  • Set up the dining room for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch service, including linens, place settings, glassware, and table dĂ©cor to standard.
  • Stock and maintain service stations with china, glassware, flatware, linens, condiments, ice, coffee, and tea throughout each meal period.
  • Transport soiled dishes, glassware, and linens to the dish area, sorting and stacking them properly to prevent breakage and loss.
  • Polish glassware and flatware, fold napkins, and complete assigned side work before, during, and after service.
  • Complete opening and closing duties, including changing linens, restocking, sweeping, removing trash, and securing the dining room.
  • Support banquets, private dining, room service, and other hotel food and beverage outlets as business needs require.
  • Follow all health department, food safety, and sanitation standards, and handle cleaning chemicals and equipment safely per Safety Data Sheet (SDS) guidelines.
  • Clean up spills immediately and report any maintenance, safety, or hygiene issues to management without delay.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with servers, hosts, culinary, stewarding, and management to ensure smooth restaurant operations.
  • Any and all duties assigned by management.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Experience

 

  • High school diploma or GED preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six (6) months or more of experience as a busser, food runner, or in a restaurant or hospitality setting preferred; on-the-job training provided.



Required Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to understand and communicate in English with guests and co-workers, and to follow verbal and written directions or requests.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and remain calm and professional in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Basic knowledge of table settings, clearing techniques, and steps of service, or willingness to learn.
  • Strong attention to detail in maintaining clean, well-stocked, and properly set tables and service stations.
  • Ability to anticipate guest needs and respond with a friendly, courteous, and service-minded attitude.
  • Strong teamwork skills and willingness to assist servers, hosts, culinary, and stewarding as needed.
  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency while maintaining quality, safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Ability to carry trays and bus tubs and to handle china, glassware, and flatware carefully to prevent breakage.
  • Ability to remain discreet and respectful of guest privacy, and to handle guest concerns calmly and professionally.
  • Basic knowledge of food allergens and the ability to relay guest dietary needs accurately to the server or kitchen.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to take direction and accept feedback from supervisors.
  • Knowledge of safe chemical handling, proper lifting techniques, and emergency procedures, or willingness to learn.
  • Food handlers’ card or the ability to obtain certification at time of hire.
  • Responsible beverage service certification where required by state or local law, or the ability to obtain it within the required timeframe.


Schedule

Work schedules are based on the operational needs of the business. Availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays is required for this position.


Physical, Mental and Environmental & Technical Demands

Fast-paced environment, multiple tasks to be handled under time constraint. Must be able to bend, crouch, kneel, and twist in the work area. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, pushing, and pulling objects weighing up to 250lbs. often for extended periods. Must be able to maneuver around property. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to operate a computer, telephone, and copier. Must have manual dexterity to operate all office equipment. May include exposure to high levels of ambient noise for prolonged periods, must be able to perform essential job functions effectively in such conditions.


Grooming

All employees must maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance. Specific uniform guidelines and/or required articles of clothing will be explained as part of the orientation process.
