We are currently searching for an experienced Senior Roadway Engineer to support our Mid Atlantic Region located in Springfield, VA.


To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, a BS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.


What you’ll be doing:

  • Leading or assisting in the development of project designs and directing engineers and designers to successfully execute and deliver project work, while implementing client focused strategies
  • Developing and checking engineering estimates, construction specifications, and coordinating with subconsultants
  • Applying established and well-defined engineering techniques, procedures, policies, or standards
  • Preparing reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, and designs for projects
  • Working in a team environment team to deliver a range of transportation and civil design projects and participating in business development efforts and meetings with clients. 
  • Participating in ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs, and policies. Coordinating work to ensure best practices with all team members
  • Identify and analyze problems using reasoning to arrive at conclusions
  • Apply standard practices and techniques to accomplish work assignments
  • Understand and adhere to assigned phase and task schedules and budgets to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of project
  • Adhere to company standards for quality assurance and quality control as defined in the quality manual

What you need to have:

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 8 – 15+ years relevant experience in roadway design
  • Must have proven skills in meeting DOT expectations, schedules, and budgets
  • Written and communication skills
  • VDOT experience is preferred but not required
  • PE preferred
  • Experienced in DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications
  • Proficient with MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)
