Job Description:

The ASU Alumni Association is seeking an experienced people leader and relationship builder to guide one of the university’s most visible and far-reaching engagement programs. The Director of Alumni Volunteer Networks will lead a professional team and hundreds of alumni volunteers who create connections, strengthen Sun Devil pride and represent ASU in communities around the world. This is an opportunity to shape the future of a global volunteer network and build the structure, leadership pipeline and engagement strategy necessary for its continued growth and success.


The Director of Alumni Volunteer Networks provides strategic leadership for the ASU Alumni Association’s global network of geographic, affinity and international chapters, clubs and connections. This position manages multiple professional staff members and provides direction, support and accountability to hundreds of alumni volunteers who serve as ambassadors for Arizona State University around the world.


The Director is responsible for setting a clear vision, translating strategy into action, and building the systems, expectations and culture necessary for a large volunteer organization to thrive. This individual will strengthen existing networks, identify opportunities for growth and ensure alumni volunteers have meaningful, well-supported ways to connect Sun Devils with one another and with ASU.


The successful candidate will be an experienced people leader and relationship builder who demonstrates sound judgment and can lead through influence across a complex, decentralized organization. This individual must be equally comfortable coaching staff, engaging alumni leaders, addressing organizational challenges and using data to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the volunteer network.


This position is in person Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Old Main on the Tempe campus. Regular evening and weekend work is required based on the Alumni Association’s events and engagement schedule.


Position Salary Range: $85,000-$95,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties:

  • Develop and execute the strategy for the ASU Alumni Association’s global network of geographic, affinity and international chapters, clubs and connections, establishing clear priorities, operating standards and measures of success.
  • Lead, coach and develop the professional staff responsible for volunteer engagement, chapter operations, programming and administrative support. Establish clear goals, accountability and a collaborative, service-oriented team culture.
  • Provide leadership and direction to hundreds of alumni volunteers worldwide, ensuring they have the training, resources, communication and support necessary to represent the ASU Alumni Association effectively.
  • Build a sustainable volunteer leadership pipeline through intentional recruitment, onboarding, development, recognition and succession planning.
  • Establish clear governance practices, volunteer roles and performance expectations across the network. Address challenges proactively and make recommendations to strengthen, restructure or conclude networks when appropriate.
  • Evaluate the health and effectiveness of chapters and communities using participation data, volunteer feedback and organizational priorities. Use those insights to strengthen existing networks and identify opportunities for future growth.
  • Guide staff and volunteer leaders in developing meaningful programs and experiences that connect alumni with one another, advance ASU’s mission and create opportunities for alumni to support students and the university.
  • Build strong relationships with alumni leaders, university partners and key stakeholders to align volunteer initiatives with broader institutional priorities and expand opportunities for alumni engagement.
  • Oversee departmental and chapter budgets, operational processes, volunteer policies and administrative systems to ensure responsible stewardship, consistency and accountability.
  • Identify and implement technology, tools and scalable practices that improve volunteer communication, data collection, chapter support and network effectiveness.
  • Represent the ASU Alumni Association at meetings, programs and events with alumni, volunteers, university leaders and community partners.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience leading a large, complex or geographically distributed volunteer network.
  • Demonstrated experience directly supervising, coaching and evaluating professional staff, including setting expectations, managing performance and supporting employee development.
  • Proven success recruiting, developing, motivating and retaining volunteer leaders.
  • Experience developing strategy and translating organizational goals into clear plans, staff responsibilities and measurable outcomes.
  • Experience establishing volunteer governance practices, operating standards, leadership succession plans or accountability measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess program effectiveness, address underperformance and lead teams or programs through growth and change.
  • Strong professional presence and demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with alumni leaders, university partners and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, including experience navigating sensitive situations, resolving conflict and influencing without direct authority.
  • Experience using data, feedback and performance measures to evaluate programs and guide decisions.
  • Experience managing budgets and allocating resources across multiple programs, regions or teams.
  • Experience working in a complex, decentralized organization with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
  • Experience with constituent relationship management systems, such as Salesforce, and technology used to engage and support volunteers.
  • Experience engaging individuals across different geographic regions, cultures, identities and perspectives.
  • Experience in higher education, alumni relations, volunteer engagement, community relations or nonprofit management is preferred.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Some duties are performed outside of the office setting in various areas in and around campus, which will require standing for varying lengths of time and walking moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
