Histology Technologist 

Job Summary: Responsible for processing, embedding, cutting and staining of tissue slides, accurate quality control, special projects, equipment maintenance and all other duties assigned by the Histology Supervisor. 

Location:

On-Site, Tinley Park, IL

Work Responsibilities:

  • Receives specimens of tissue from surgical or diagnostic cases.
    • Performs minor grossing procedures and records accession number on cassette(s) for tissue processing.
    • Embeds tissue according to departmental standard operating procedures.
    • Performs microtomy of blocks and prepares slides for routine/specialized staining techniques per departmental standard operating procedures.
    • Performs routine H/E staining and specialized staining. Ability to recognize and troubleshoot problems with staining techniques desired.
    • Performs manual cover slipping technique of all stained slides per departmental standard operating procedures.
    • Determine upon microscopic exam, acceptability of slides based on evaluation of proper staining reaction and document any problems.
    • Must have thorough knowledge of routine/specialized histology equipment and must be able to troubleshoot minor problems in event of equipment failure.
  • Performs quality control measures as set forth by departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrates quality customer service through positive interaction which meets the needs of co-workers, clients and vendors.
  • Participates in the validation of laboratory methods and procedures to meet the changing health care needs of our patients.
  • Adheres to all regulatory, institutional and departmental policies to ensure laboratory accreditation
  • Adheres to all regulatory and laboratory safety policies (OSHA) to provide a safe and secure environment for fellow employees. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the department.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Histology, or related discipline required.
  • One year experience in Histology laboratory preferred.

Skills & Qualification

  • Working experience with laboratory information systems.
  • Ability to ambulate throughout the lab.
  • Personal computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, etc). 
  • Must be able to work independently and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse patient population and all levels of personnel.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of routine/specialized histology techniques. 

Registration, Licensure and Certification: 

  • Certified as HT/HTL through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
