What is the Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program:Â
The selected apprentices will receive paid on the job training as a Medical Assistant at a Munson Healthcare facility while attending lectures and laboratory training through Baker College's 9-month Medical Assistant Certificate Program or Penn Fosters Online Medical Assistant Program. At the completion of the programs, the apprentices will have the opportunity to complete the AAMA certification exam to become a Certified Medical Assistant. Â
In collaboration with Michigan Works!, Munson Healthcare will be covering the cost of the Tuition for the selected apprentices in exchange for a service commitment at the completion of the program. Â

A Day in the Life :
What is a Medical Assistant?Â
A Medical Assistant is an allied health professional who supports Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers in a clinic setting. The role includes both clinical and administrative duties and frequent interaction with patients and their families. Â
Administrative Duties may include:Â
- Answering phonesÂ
- Greeting patientsÂ
- Documenting and updating medical recordsÂ
- Coding and filling out insurance formsÂ
- Scheduling appointmentsÂ
- Arranging for hospital admissions, referrals and laboratory servicesÂ
- Using computer applicationsÂ
Clinical Duties may include: Â
- Taking medical historiesÂ
- Explaining treatment and procedures to patientsÂ
- Timely follow through and completion of referral requestsÂ
- Preparing patients for examinationÂ
- Assisting the physician during examsÂ
- Collecting and preparing lab specimensÂ
- Performing basic laboratory tests including blood drawsÂ
- Instructing patients via standardized pathways and protocolsÂ
- Preparing and administrating medications as directed by the physicianÂ
- InjectionsÂ
- Removing sutures and changing dressingsÂ
- Other clinical services as required by specialty Â
 Compensation:Â
- Starting Pay: $17.01 / hourÂ
- After completion of 180 day introductory period, increase to: $17.26/ hourÂ
- Upon receiving certification: $20.44 - $24.52 (commensurate with experience) Â
