Dustcart Driver – 3 Month Contract

Shift Pattern: AM Shift Pattern
Pay: Bi-weekly

Summary


We are seeking an experienced Dustcart Driver to join our dynamic Waste Collection Service in Thamesmead. This role is crucial for ensuring the efficient and safe collection of household, recycling, organic, commercial, and bulky waste across the borough. As a frontline operational role, you will be responsible for driving a refuse collection vehicle, working alongside a team of loaders, and maintaining high standards of health and safety while delivering excellent customer service.

Responsibilities


Waste Collection Services


  • Drive and operate a refuse collection vehicle (Dustcart).
  • Support the collection of household, recycling, organic, commercial, and bulky waste.
  • Conduct collections from residential properties, flatted developments, schools, shops, council buildings, and commercial premises.
  • Ensure assisted collections are completed as required and return to missed collections when directed.

Vehicle Operation


  • Safely operate a Dustcart in various environments, including residential streets and busy urban areas.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections and safety checks.
  • Report any defects, faults, or damage promptly.
  • Ensure vehicles are operated safely and in compliance with road traffic legislation.
  • Navigate restricted access routes and manage parking obstructions as necessary.

Health & Safety


  • Adhere to all Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure waste is handled and transported safely.
  • Report accidents, incidents, and near misses.
  • Promote a safe working environment at all times.
  • Wear PPE as required.

Bulky Waste & Recycling


  • Assist in the safe collection of bulky waste items.
  • Manage waste streams correctly and support recycling initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with waste management regulations.

Customer Service


  • Professionally handle enquiries from residents and businesses.
  • Promote recycling and responsible waste disposal.
  • Address service-related queries appropriately.
  • Represent the service in a professional manner at all times.

Communication & Administration


  • Maintain communication with supervisors throughout the day.
  • Complete daily vehicle and collection records.
  • Report missed collections, contamination issues, damaged bins, and operational concerns.
  • Escalate service issues when necessary.

Requirements

Requirements:

Essential


  • Clean UK Driving Licence held for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Experience driving Dustcarts or Refuse Collection Vehicles.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physically capable of performing demanding tasks.
  • Reliable and customer-focused approach.

Desirable


  • HGV Category C Licence.
  • Driver CPC Qualification.
  • Previous Local Authority waste collection experience.
  • Experience in Environmental Services.
  • Knowledge of waste management and recycling operations.

Working Environment


  • Outdoor operational role in all weather conditions.
  • Early morning shift pattern.
  • Physically demanding work involving driving, loading support, and manual handling.
  • Daily interaction with residents, businesses, and operational teams.
