Job Title: Resident Counselor/Direct Care  

Job Summary: The primary responsibility of the Resident Counselor is to provide direct support and skill building to people diagnosed with mental illness at the Enriched Living Center, a 52-bed OMH-certified residence.  

 Essential Job Functions  

  • Interact with the residents as frequently as possible in order to build trust and rapport. 
  • Promote, model and teach acceptable social behaviors to the residents. 
  • Monitor the security camera system to maintain a safe environment. 
  • Teach the residents with: personal hygiene, laundering, and social skills.  
  • Prompt and assist residents to maintain the cleanliness of their rooms. 
  • Assist in housekeeping duties, and oversee the cleaning of residents’ rooms, as necessary. 
  • Monitor medications with the residents: supervise the self-administration of medications by residents.  
  • Perform hourly rounds of the building by checking doors, windows, alarms, and looking for liquid spills, etc.   

 Minimum Job Qualifications  

  • High school diploma (or equivalent), preferably with one year of experience with the severely and persistently mentally ill population. 
  • Compassionate, caring demeanor 
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to set appropriate boundaries with residents 
  • Strong oral communication skills 
  • Ability to work as a team player 
  • Agreement with Rescue Mission of Utica’s Mission Statement   
  • Clean/valid NYS Driver’s License preferred  


PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

The tasks described signify many of the physical requirements of this position, based on a Time Weighted Average of an 8-hour work day.

  • Lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Pushing/pulling up to 25 lbs.
  • Reaching overhead with up to 20 lbs. of other material
  • Twisting at the torso in stationary position
  • Bending at waist using legs to lift objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Bending at the waist to perform work at that level
  • Standing for extended period
  • Walking for extended period
  • Walking up and down stairs
  • Sitting for extended period
  • Typing on a computer and using a mouse
  • Exposure to heat and cold

 Status 

Full-Time (40 hrs) / Part-Time (16 hrs) 

 Shifts 

M-F, every other weekend – , 3 pm – 11 pm, 11 pm – 7 am 

Pay Rate: $16.50-17.50 depending on experience
