Pew Research Center’s Data Labs team uses data science tools and techniques to produce original research. The team contributes to the Center’s reputation for experimentation and tells interesting stories about the behaviors and life experiences of the public.Ā Ā 

The Associate DirectorĀ is responsible forĀ managing the team’s junior and mid-level data scientists; weighing in on technical and methodological decisions across the team’s various internally- andĀ externally-facingĀ projects; andĀ establishingĀ research standards and best practices across the team.Ā The ideal candidate will have a strong background in social science researchĀ pairedĀ withĀ a deep understanding of theĀ technicalĀ and methodological decisionsĀ needed toĀ produceĀ research that is on par with the Center’s standards.Ā 

While the Associate Director will have opportunitiesĀ for individual research contributions,Ā theĀ primaryĀ focusĀ of the role isĀ facilitatingĀ theĀ broaderĀ researchĀ portfolioĀ of the team.Ā This position reports to the Managing Director of Data Labs.Ā 

Primary ResponsibilitiesĀ 

Team managementĀ 

  • Responsible for day-to-day management and career development of junior and mid-levelĀ research staff.Ā 

  • PublicĀ spokespersonĀ for the teamĀ at conferences,Ā the mediaĀ and elsewhere.Ā 

  • Interface withĀ internal partners and stakeholders around research production,Ā disseminationĀ and budgeting.Ā 

Methods,Ā researchĀ standardsĀ and processĀ guidanceĀ 

  • Works with research staff to select mostĀ appropriate methodsĀ andĀ projectĀ designs for ongoing research efforts.Ā Ā 

  • Manages the team’s technical toolkit, ensures thatĀ researchĀ best practicesĀ are being followed and sufficiently documented.Ā 

  • Contributes significantly to AI governance and use of LLMsĀ in the research process for the teamĀ andĀ across the Center.Ā Ā 

Team strategyĀ 

  • Helps toĀ pitch,Ā selectĀ and refine theĀ team’s ongoing research portfolio.Ā HelpsĀ toĀ shepherd projects from conception toĀ production.Ā 

  • In collaboration with the Managing Director andĀ VP of Methods and Innovation,Ā setsĀ the overall strategicĀ direction and focus of the team.Ā 

Education/Training/ExperienceĀ 

  • PhD-level research experience or equivalentĀ 

  • Experience leading research teams or managing people preferredĀ 

Knowledge and Skills RequirementsĀ 

  • Experience conductingĀ orĀ managing technicalĀ researchĀ projectsĀ usingĀ diverse data sourcesĀ (includingĀ web, social media, text, geographical, and/or audiovisual data).Ā 

  • StrongĀ understanding of the technical infrastructures that enable and supportĀ social scienceĀ methods atĀ scale.Ā 

  • Excellent communication andĀ conflict resolution skills. Ability to speak fluently about complex research topics withĀ both technical and non-technical audiences.Ā 

  • Experience working withĀ largeĀ data sets, managing largeĀ computeĀ workloads, andĀ monitoringĀ cloud computing infrastructure such as AWS.Ā 

  • DeepĀ expertiseĀ in applied NLP, including transformer fine-tuning, zero-shotĀ and few-shot classification, LLM prompt engineering, and model evaluation best practices. CanĀ articulateĀ and champion a technical vision that is grounded in social science research.Ā 

  • Experience with multimodal data processing, including audio, video, and image data; familiarity withĀ HuggingFaceĀ ecosystem preferred.Ā

Compensation:Ā The typical starting salary for this position is $167,400 annually.Ā Ā

Hybrid Work Schedule:Ā Pew Research Center staffĀ are required toĀ be present in the Center’s Washington, D.C., office three core days weekly (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).Ā Staff may workĀ virtually fromĀ remote locations on other days in a typical work week.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
