Sonic Summary

info
  • The Data Product Owner role involves transforming data assets into user-friendly products, focusing on user needs and mission outcomes.
  • Candidates should have a foundation in product ownership or management, with experience in discovery, roadmaps, and backlog management.
  • The position requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience and offers a competitive salary ranging from $90,000 to $120,000 annually.
  • Key responsibilities include creating product visions, prioritizing backlogs, and collaborating with technical teams to ensure product value.
  • The role emphasizes strong communication skills and the ability to make informed trade-offs in regulated environments.

The work

Data Product Owners turn data assets into products people can understand, trust, and use. They set the direction for datasets, dashboards, APIs, analytical services, and other data capabilities, then keep delivery focused on the users and mission outcomes those products are meant to serve.

The work combines discovery, prioritization, and delivery. Data Product Owners learn how users make decisions, translate those needs into a roadmap and an ordered backlog, define acceptance criteria, and work with engineers, analysts, designers, governance specialists, and program leaders through release and adoption. They make hard tradeoffs visible and keep asking whether the product is producing value, not merely whether the team shipped it.

Who you are

You are energized by the space between a promising idea and a product that earns regular use. You listen closely, decide clearly, and can say no, not yet, or not this way while keeping stakeholders focused on the outcome.

You are fluent enough in data and delivery to work on substance with technical teams, but you never lose sight of the people using the product. You treat the roadmap as a living set of choices, not a ceremonial plan.
