Position Summary
The Medical Director of Correctional Health provides clinical leadership and oversight for healthcare services at the Central Detention Facility (CDF) and Central Treatment Facility (CTF). Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), this position serves as the responsible health authority and senior clinical liaison to the Department of Corrections.
The Medical Director is responsible for clinical quality, provider performance, clinical staffing, quality improvement initiatives, operational health policies, and coordination of multidisciplinary healthcare services. The position also provides direct patient care approximately 20% of the time.
Key Responsibilities
Provide clinical leadership and oversight of medical services at CDF and CTF.
Serve as the senior clinical liaison for the Department of Corrections.
Oversee clinical judgment, quality, access, and timeliness of patient care.
Lead and participate in site leadership, provider, quality improvement, and other clinical meetings.
Coordinate provider schedules, coverage, and leave requests.
Develop and implement site-specific quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with the Health Services Administrator.
Chair the Morbidity and Mortality Committee.
Manage the provider peer review process and provide appropriate clinical feedback.
Complete annual provider evaluations and provide feedback regarding provider performance.
Orient new providers and serve as a clinical resource to providers and staff.
Monitor and evaluate clinical issues related to nursing and healthcare delivery.
Collaborate with medical, nursing, behavioral health, and administrative leadership to improve quality of care, productivity, patient flow, and satisfaction.
Monitor hospital and specialty care utilization.
Review correctional healthcare reports for accuracy and address identified deficiencies.
Develop and review operational health policies and procedures.
Establish systems to coordinate care among multidisciplinary healthcare providers.
Identify provider staffing needs and support recruitment and hiring efforts.
Collaborate with specialty directors and DOC leadership to address clinical and operational issues.
Participate in monthly Medical Director meetings and joint HSA-MD quality improvement meetings.
Assist with medical alerts, court-related matters, and other DOC medical issues.
Develop mechanisms and agreements, when necessary, to ensure required healthcare services are provided and properly monitored.
Provide direct clinical care approximately 20% of the time.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Current and unrestricted Washington, DC medical license.
Current DEA registration and CDS certificate.
Medical leadership or management experience.
3–7 years of experience in an ambulatory care setting preferred.
At least 3 years of management experience preferred.
Medical Director experience preferred.
Correctional healthcare experience preferred.
Medical Director experience in a correctional healthcare setting or community health center preferred.
Strong knowledge of medical theory, practice, and current healthcare developments.
Knowledge of healthcare management principles and practices.
Knowledge of budget, accounting, procurement, inventory systems, and personnel management.
Demonstrated ability to navigate a complex, multi-stakeholder clinical environment.
Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and manage difficult situations.
Strong computer and technology skills.
