Work involves diagnosing problems and performing repairs and preventive maintenance on all types of sugar cane harvesting and related equipment. Types of equipment will depend on area of assignment - harvester and tractor; trailer; or truck shop.   Work is performed under minimal supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position relies on experience and exercises some independent judgement to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures.     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions in this job description are intended only as an illustration of the various types of duties that may be performed. Maintains, troubleshoots, and performs complex repairs on tractors, sugar cane harvest equipment, and any other equipment in the Agriculture Department’s field and shop operations Repairs harvest equipment (e.g., cane elevators, cane harvesters, tractors, air compressors) and any equipment utilized in support of agriculture Assists in the tire servicing of all types of equipment, including forklifts, front-end loaders, tractors and harvesting equipment Inspects and diagnoses equipment failure, performs timed repairs, and oversees the operation of numerous lifting devices, including proper rigging procedures  Performs scheduled maintenance in accordance with manufacturer and cooperative standards Performs standard layouts and set-ups of dimensions and tolerances Provides hands-on guidance and mentorship to team members Supports daily operations by addressing challenges, fostering collaboration, and ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures Promotes a positive work environment, assists in employee development, and helps drive team success Utilizes standard shop hand tools, measuring devices, and equipment Works collaboratively with other team members and supervisors to achieve project goals Ensures the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times Follows organizational and public safety guidelines and protocols, performs job functions in a safe manner, and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures   SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May train, coordinate, provide guidance to and review the work of lower-level staff to accomplish operational plans and results   MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of mechanical experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of agricultural equipment, including some previous lead-worker responsibility or demonstrated ability to lead the work of others;  OR a combination of experience, certification, education and training that demonstrates expertise in the related areas.   CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must have own set of tools Must possess and maintain a regular Class E Driver’s License   PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified A/C certification Bilingual – English and Spanish   KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of heavy equipment mechanics  Thorough knowledge of safety protocols and compliance standards related to equipment operation Skill in the use of applicable department and organization specific software; ability to learn and become proficient in the use of other specialized software as may be required Skill in using mathematics required for the work Ability to plan, assign, and guide the work of assigned staff  Ability to read manuals, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment Ability to work in hot, cold, wet, humid, dusty, and foggy working conditions depending on weather Ability to adapt quickly to a multicultural environment Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines  Ability to follow instructions from supervisors and senior workers Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a service-oriented team Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, orally and in writing Ability to follow public safety guidelines and protocols and perform job functions in a safe manner Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds Ability to maintain regular attendance to ensure efficient and effective performance of job duties   AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) REQUIREMENTS:  Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
