We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to oversee laboratory operations, quality, staff development, equipment performance, and regulatory compliance. This position combines advanced medical laboratory expertise with leadership and management responsibilities to ensure accurate, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Certification
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or AMT.
Current state-required laboratory license or credential, where applicable.
West Virginia: High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License.
Pennsylvania: No state license required.
Ohio: No state license required.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of laboratory experience.
At least 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Management or a related field.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee laboratory diagnostic services, specimen preparation, testing procedures, and reporting processes.
Develop and implement laboratory operating, quality, and troubleshooting procedures.
Ensure laboratory equipment meets established performance and quality standards.
Coordinate equipment maintenance, service, repair, and replacement.
Manage laboratory operations within the approved budget and provide justification for operational needs.
Monitor laboratory workload and staffing requirements and make appropriate operational adjustments.
Maintain high-quality laboratory results through quality assurance and quality control programs.
Participate in proficiency testing and collaborate with pathologists and other healthcare professionals.
Review and update laboratory policies and procedures to support quality improvement.
Oversee the laboratory information system, including identifying system needs, resolving issues, maintaining security, and protecting confidential information.
Evaluate and implement new tests, methods, instrumentation, and laboratory programs.
Lead staff orientation, training, continuing education, and competency development.
Supervise, coach, and evaluate laboratory staff.
Address performance concerns and support employee development.
Maintain current professional and technical knowledge through continuing education, workshops, webinars, publications, and professional organizations.
Ensure compliance with applicable state licensure and continuing education requirements.
Lead and participate in staff meetings, committees, projects, and quality improvement initiatives.
Support productivity and operational improvements throughout the laboratory.
May supervise and evaluate students and trainees participating in medical technology and other healthcare-related programs.
Skills & Abilities
Strong knowledge of medical laboratory science and laboratory management principles.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to manage laboratory operations and staff effectively.
Ability to provide quality services to diverse patient populations, including:
Neonates
Pediatrics
Adolescents
Adults
Geriatric patients
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods.
Ability to work safely while following applicable infection control and laboratory safety practices.
Work Environment
Laboratory environment with exposure to various clinical specimens and healthcare-related hazards.
Must maintain awareness of infection control requirements and environmental safety standards.
