What You Can Expect Working in the Estimator Intern Position
The Estimator Intern supports RedGuard's Custom Projects 聽estimating function by assisting with active estimates and completing targeted 聽process-improvement work. The internship is designed to provide meaningful 聽exposure to estimating complex, engineered modular buildings while producing 聽practical tools and data that improve departmental accuracy, consistency, and 聽efficiency. Working under the Custom Projects Sales Manager and alongside the 聽Preconstruction Manager, Estimators, Sales, Engineering, Project Management, 聽Production, and outside vendors, the intern will contribute to material 聽takeoffs, cost development, quote coordination, estimate documentation, and 聽proposal support. The intern will also complete a primary capstone project 聽focused on takeoff-software standardization and more repeatable 聽steel-structure estimating in ProEst.
Responsibilities聽
路 Review requests for quotation, drawings, 聽specifications, customer scopes of work, floor plans, project planning 聽information, and related bid documents to help identify project requirements 聽and scope gaps.
路 Perform detailed material takeoffs and assist 聽with the development of material, labor, freight, subcontractor, 聽design-service, and other estimate inputs under the guidance of experienced 聽team members.
路 Enter and organize estimate information in 聽ProEst, including quantities, cost inputs, assumptions, inclusions, 聽exclusions, and supporting documentation.
路 Assist with vendor and subcontractor requests 聽for quotation; track responses and capture pricing, lead times, scope 聽clarifications, qualifications, and exclusions.
路 Help verify alignment among the estimate, 聽proposal, drawings, customer requirements, and supporting bid documents before 聽internal reviews and customer submission.
路 Participate in bid reviews, estimate revisions, 聽process discussions, and cross-functional meetings to understand how 聽commercial, technical, and production decisions affect project cost and risk.
路 Maintain orderly estimate files, cost 聽references, takeoff records, and assigned tracking tools so work can be 聽reviewed, repeated, and transferred to other team members.
Requirements
聽聽
Minimum Qualifications聽
路 Current student or recent graduate in 聽construction management, engineering, architecture, building science, 聽industrial technology, business or data analytics, or another relevant field; 聽an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and applicable 聽experience will be considered.
路 Strong technical aptitude, curiosity, and 聽demonstrated ability to learn unfamiliar systems, terminology, and processes.
路 Basic ability to interpret technical drawings 聽and specifications, or the demonstrated capacity to develop that skill 聽quickly.
路 Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other 聽Microsoft 365 applications.
路 Strong attention to detail, quantitative 聽reasoning, organization, written communication, and verbal communication 聽skills.
路 Ability to work independently within defined 聽assignments while seeking guidance when assumptions, scope, or risk are 聽unclear.
路 Ability to collaborate professionally with 聽employees, vendors, and other stakeholders and to manage changing priorities 聽in a deadline-driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications聽
路 Coursework or experience involving construction 聽estimating, structural systems, steel fabrication, manufacturing, cost 聽analysis, process improvement, or data organization.
路 Experience with Bluebeam Revu, PlanSwift, 聽Autodesk Takeoff, ProEst, computer-aided design software, or comparable 聽estimating and takeoff tools.
路 Experience creating reusable templates, 聽assemblies, tool libraries, standard work, or documented workflows.
路 Prior internship, employment, student 聽organization, or project experience in a construction, engineering, 聽architecture, fabrication, or manufacturing environment.
