Forming part of the EMEA leadership team and reporting into global Director level.
Initial department size (and rapidly growing) 40+ across Development (AWS), Legacy (C#), QA and DevOps working within Agile/Lean environments.The role will lead a distributed team of high performers for a globally recognised iconic brand within the retail space.Working closely with global Directors, the Head of Software Engineering role will be accountable for implementing an exciting cloud-focused technical strategy (Amazon Web Services) within the EMEA region.
Focused on supporting Software Engineers & QA's, the role will line manage 4 Leads across various departments.Responsibilities: A strong people leader who can galvanise a team behind a strategic direction, with evidence of successfully delivering transformation.
Lead a team of IT professionals in an emotionally intelligent way paying attention to delivery of business outcomes and personal development.Build skills, attract talent and foster a culture of in-house technical knowledge and innovation that can support a broad spectrum of software;
in-house built, open source and 3rd party SaaS.
Lead and ensure your team are working as a cohesive unit aligned to the principles and philosophy of the organisations IT strategy and Ways of WorkingChampion and drive forward the creation of a culture in which employees take responsibility, help each other to be successful and remain a step aheadOperate as a member of the IT & Data leadership team providing support to your colleagues and a valued opinion in matters beyond your key area of expertiseManage the performance review process for your team through 1-2-1s, objective setting, mentoring and coachingCommunicate technical concepts and break down complex business problems into easily understood communications to internal and external partnersBuilding an excellent technology culture of highly autonomous, intrinsically motivated, well aligned teams.
Continually enhance engineering capabilities, through introduction of modern engineering concepts, reducing the risk of change, improved quality and speed to marketMature the software engineering practice to balance pace, agility, governance, tech debt, re-use and reliabilityChampion and ensure the global technical strategy is fully understood across the departmentDrive improvements in our software engineering practice of continuous delivery and promote cloud computing and open source solutions where applicable.
Skills / Experience Required:Acted as a Senior Manager within an Engineering department building modern services / applicationsTechnical background, having worked technically with some form of modern OO languageA fundamental understanding of the principles of Agile, Lean & KanbanOutstanding people leadership with first-class communication skillsExperienced in delivering change within an Agile environment including utilising principles such as CI, CD and TDD Not essential, but would be great AWS certified (or willing to undertake)Knowledge / familiarity with Domain Driven Design Leeds Nottingham Sheffield Manchester Durham Newcastle Sunderland Birmingham Coventry Midlands North North East Yorkshire Darlington Bradford
