Role Purpose:
Provide specialist environmental support, advice and guidance to the Operations team, encompassing emergency and repair, mains replacement, maintenance and Capital Projects
The Environmental Specialist will support the business in ensuring that all work is undertaken in line with relevant environmental legislation, NGN processes and best practice, and will take a lead role in demonstrating and reporting environmental compliance.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
- Identification of environmental constraints on sites and providing specialist advice to Project Engineers to mitigate against environmental impacts.
- Ensure that all Capital/Maintenance Project activities are undertaken in line with NGN processes. To lead in environmental compliance by providing authoritative guidance and assistance to projects.
- Identification and implementation of sustainability improvements and benefits company wide and within individual projects.
- Providing input into development of designs in line with best practice and environmental constraints
- Identifying and obtaining required environmental permits and consents for works across all of NGN’s work areas.
- Review of contractors’ environmental documentation.
- Undertaking regular site inspections and audits
- Auditing of DSP environmental management systems - assurance for regulatory reporting etc. Checking of all environmental RIIO reporting data - enabling NGN to accurately report our environmental performance and demonstrate measurable improvement.
- Producing technical reports and provide specialist technical input into incident investigation
- Providing advice on planning requirements of projects and aiding in obtaining planning permission where required
- Liaison with relevant stakeholders at all project phases.
- Providing environmental training and briefings to colleagues and contractors
- Communicate best environmental practices throughout NGN workstreams. Communicate any findings from environmental incidents to stakeholders. Provide environmental input for regular network communications
- Prepare sites and documentation in line with the EMS and ISO14001 compliant processes and procedures. Prepare sites and documentation for annual external ISO14001 audit
- Provide expert advice on noise issues and carry out noise monitoring on where required
Expertise, knowledge, and experience required:
Essential:
- Ideally educated to degree level in Environmental Science or a related discipline, with additional environmental based management qualifications such IEMA Diploma
- Full membership of a relevant professional Environmental institution
- Experience of managing regulatory relationships in a safety or environmentally focused environment
- Experienced in Environmental Statutory Reporting
- Experienced in environmental management and risk control on a wide range of construction projects in a similar industry
- Experience in developing policies and procedures to effectively control Environmental risks
- Proven experience in coaching and communicating and influencing behaviour
- Experience of investigating incidents / events to identify root causation and enable organisational improvement
- Previous experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, enforcing authorities and principal contactors
- Competence in the use of Microsoft software
- Wide knowledge of environment legislation and risk control relating to the construction / utilities environment or similar regulated industry
Desirable:
- Wide knowledge of NGN's operations and associated technical documents
- Understanding of a regulated company's strategic positioning.
- Gas industry knowledge and experience
