Thorn Baker are looking for an ambitious and detail-oriented Junior Quantity Surveyor, or an assistant looking to take the next step in their development. Working for a regional private residential developer supporting the Senior QS ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with quality and safety standards. Your Responsibilities:

  • Cost Estimation & Budgeting: Assist in the preparation of accurate cost estimates for residential developments and ongoing project costs.
  • Contract Administration: Support the preparation and administration of contracts, including dealing with variations, claims, and payment certificates.
  • Tendering & Procurement: Help in the preparation of tender documents, reviewing bids, and managing the procurement process.
  • Cost Control: Monitor project budgets, track costs, and assist with reporting on cost performance and forecasting.
  • Measurement & Valuation: Assist in measuring and valuing work completed on-site, ensuring accurate valuation and payment applications.
  • Site Visits: Undertake site visits as required to assess progress, identify risks, and review contract performance.
  • Reporting: Assist in preparing regular reports for senior management, including project cost updates, risk assessments, and progress reports.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with site teams, contractors, and clients to resolve issues and ensure smooth financial management of projects.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all records and documentation are maintained according to company procedures and legal requirements.
  • Risk Management: Assist in identifying and mitigating risks to project cost and timeframes.

Required Skills:

  • Degree or working towards in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 1-2 years experience as an Assistant QS, Junior QS, or similar role in the construction industry
  • Familiarity with construction contracts (JCT, NEC) and cost management practices
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Strong analytical skills with keen attention to detail
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills, able to liaise with various stakeholders
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
