Our client is a well-established engineering company based in the London area, primarily delivering M&E-focused project work. They are currently seeking a Commercial Manager to join their Power & Energy division.
The business operates across a range of sectors including rail, aviation, and utilities, among others. Notably, they are involved in high-profile projects such as works at the Houses of Parliament and Heathrow Airport.

Role Summary
This is a senior management role with full responsibility for the commercial performance of the Power & Energy division. You will oversee and manage all projects within the division and their respective teams, ensuring revenue, margin, and cash flow targets are achieved.
You will be accountable for ensuring that all projects are properly set up and delivered in line with contractual obligations, as well as company processes and procedures. Timely, accurate project reporting is essential, and you will also be expected to provide guidance on construction law matters, develop strategic client relationships, and champion best practice across the division.
Responsibilities
Management:
- Manage and take responsibility for the commercial teams under your control on the designated projects. Build commercial teams to suit a project.
- Manage the performance of those staff who report to you. Coach, mentor and support them in their role
- Intervene when necessary
- Motivate project teams to deliver success
- Hold project teams accountable
Contracts:
- Negotiate contracts, in conjunction with the Commercial Director, in the best interests of the company.
- Managing the preparation and submission of contractual letters to clients and / or subcontractors
- Maintain a strong but fair contractual approach towards the Client and Sub-contractors
- Assist with the preparation of delay/loss and expense claims should they be required. Ensure protection measures are in place and contemporaneous records are kept throughout the project sufficient to be relied upon as a basis of cost recovery.
Procurement:
- Work with the procurement department and the project team carry out front end cost benchmarking /pre-award negotiation and final letting. Ensure best price is achieved
- Seek out alternatives / value engineering and challenge the status quo
Cashflow:
- Ensure a positive cash flow is maintained on each project and by extension the sector
- Ensure the importance of good cashflow management is promoted within the project teams
- Ensure certifications are given and payment dates are met by the Client
Claims/ Variations:
- Ensure claims/variations are compiled to a high standard and are submitted within the required timeframes
- Ensure condition precedent and notification provisions are operated correctly
- Review variation/quotation submissions. Ensure they are of the standard expected by the client
- Effectively manage and report on downstream claims/variations
Cost & Financial Reports:
- Critically analyse and verify all financial reports for the projects within the sector prior to them being submitted
- Demonstrate and implement cost consciousness and pro-actively seek to reduce project cost
- Ensure accurate cash flows are in place throughout the reporting cycle
- Alongside the Head of Sector, present sector financial performance to the board on a monthly basis.
- Identify risk and opportunities and create a management plan around them
