Typically, this person will oversee steel construction and outfitting activities on newbuild vessels, ensuring high standards of quality, safety, compliance and schedule adherence throughout the full construction lifecycle.

Duties and responsibilities of the Newbuild Steel & Outfitting Supervisor:

  • Manage and supervise shipbuilding activities to ensure work is completed safely, to specification, and to the required quality standards.
  • Liaise closely with shipowners, shipyards, equipment makers and subcontractors to ensure milestones and deliverables are achieved.
  • Carry out detailed inspections of steel fabrication, welding and assembly processes to verify compliance with drawings, contracts and classification requirements.
  • Review and interpret production drawings, assess design changes, and support the resolution of technical or construction issues.
  • Contribute to the Test & Inspection Plan, providing recommendations to improve efficiency and production oversight.
  • Work collaboratively with classification societies (e.g., DNV), flag authorities and other regulatory bodies.
  • Attend and document key inspections, monitoring progress of steelwork, outfitting and overall vessel construction.
  • Independently assess shipyard progress against the programme and provide regular updates to the newbuild superintendent.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, reports, non-conformities, comments and punch-list items.
  • Prepare for inspections through review of drawings, vendor documentation and material certificates.
  • Support and resolve site-based issues as required to maintain workflow and schedule.
  • Produce weekly progress reports covering site performance and inspection status.
  • Oversee block fabrication, block joining, painting (including PSPC requirements), outfitting activities, tank testing and pipeline testing.
  • Attend sea trials and follow up on corrective actions relating to identified deficiencies.
  • Access all work locations including shipyards, vessels under construction and restricted spaces to conduct daily inspections.
  • Work within confined spaces, at height, onboard scaffolding and around active machinery during vessel construction.

 

Qualifications and requirements for the Newbuild Steel & Outfitting Supervisor:

  • Strong background in shipbuilding steelwork, outfitting supervision, or similar marine construction discipline.
  • Knowledge of IACS unified requirements, classification rules and PSPC standards.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting steel fabrication, welding and construction inspections.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and production documentation.
