Senior Marine Engineer
Location: Portsmouth (occasional UK and overseas travel)
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Marine Engineer to join a leading engineering consultancy, supporting projects across the marine, offshore, defence, and renewable sectors.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will provide technical expertise in marine engineering to support the design, construction, and conversion of a variety of vessel types. This position involves direct client interaction, project management, and technical oversight of systems and layouts to ensure compliance with marine standards and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver marine engineering consultancy projects from concept through to completion
Engage with clients to interpret requirements and develop suitable engineering solutions
Prepare and review machinery and systems layouts, schematics, and technical documentation
Oversee and monitor ship repairs, conversions, and new builds to ensure compliance with specifications and standards
Conduct plan reviews, inspections, and testing of machinery and systems
Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers
Skills and Experience
Essential:
Approximately 10 years' experience in the marine or shipping industry
Proven track record in marine design, consultancy, or shipyard environments
Strong knowledge of ship design principles, marine systems, and shipyard practices
Familiarity with Classification Society, IMO, and other regulatory requirements
Qualified in Marine or Mechanical Engineering (Degree/HND)
or
Merchant Navy Second Engineer Unlimited Certificate of Competency (or Royal Navy equivalent)
Desirable:
Experience in ship surveys, new build, or conversion projects
Previous consultancy experience
Chartered Engineer status
or
Chief Engineer Unlimited CoC (or Royal Navy equivalent)
