Job Advert – Specialist Building Inspector (Class 3) | Local Authority – North LondonClient: Local Authority – London Borough of BarnetJob Title: Specialist Building Inspector (Class 3 Registered)Location: Colindale – Hybrid WorkingContract: Ongoing Temporary ContractPay Rate: £75 per hour Umbrella LTD (Day Rate – Inside IR35) / £60 PAYE Start Date: ASAPAbout the Role: A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced and professionally registered Specialist Building Inspector (Class 3) to join the Planning & Building Control team at a leading North London local authority.You will be responsible for delivering high-level Building Control services for a diverse and complex portfolio of developments, including high-risk, in-scope buildings under the Building Safety Act 2022. This is a hands-on, hybrid role involving site inspections, technical assessments, enforcement, and contribution to multi-disciplinary safety initiatives.Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess complex plans and undertake inspections to ensure compliance with the Building Regulations 2010, Building Act 1984, and Building Safety Act 2022.
  • Lead on enforcement activities, including dangerous structures and unauthorised works.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) alongside the Building Safety Regulator (BSR).
  • Respond to site incidents, assess safety concerns, and initiate emergency works when required.
  • Mentor and support junior inspectors and trainees as part of a structured development plan.
  • Deliver high levels of customer service and professional technical guidance to contractors, clients, and members of the public.
  • Maintain professional and legislative awareness and contribute to ISO 9001 accreditation.
  • Support the Deputy Head and Head of Building Control in strategic objectives and service delivery.
Requirements:
  • Class 3 Registration under the Building Inspector Competence Framework (BICoF)
  • Chartered membership with RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction, or Structural Engineering
  • Strong technical expertise in high-risk and complex residential developments
  • In-depth knowledge of the Building Regulations, Dangerous Structures legislation, and London Building Acts
  • Proven enforcement experience and the ability to act as an expert witness
  • Excellent report writing, plan checking, and site inspection capabilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle
  • Ability to work on rough terrain, at height, and in confined spaces as needed
