Job Role:

Would you like to be responsible for a range of submarine structures, from major pieces of equipment, such as the pressure hull to minor pieces of equipment such as seats? We currently have a vacancy for an Engineer - Structural Engineering at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.

As a Structural Engineer, you will be working with various multi-functional teams to determine the best integrated solutions across multiple submarine programmes. You will engage regularly with industrial partners and liaise with specialists to agree technical solutions that contribute to the success of our programmes.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to learn new skills and acquire specialist knowledge. You will be working within a unique and exciting engineering environment that is rivalled by no other in the current market.

This Role is intended to lead the development of the Structural System of the Submarine Design Sandbox (SDS) Platform through Design, Engineering, Transition to build, build, commission and set to work, over the next two years.

The SDS environment is a dataset developed by Submarines that has evolved and matured, currently enabling SSNA Design, Engineering and Transition to Build de-risking activities via the D2L2 contract.

The digital dataset spans across the design lifecycle; Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and NxGenDigital toolsets, whilst enabling Technology Demonstration Programmes (TDP) and spearheading Digital Thread and Twin (DTAT) initiatives. The BCCR Portland Walk Campus Simulated Environment utilises the D2L2 baseline outputs, which are value engineered to achieve the Submarine School of Experiential Learning (SCEL) capability requirements.

This provides the SCEL with a capability matching the physical and digital experiential learning requirements, while also satisfying the original use case for SDS providing better value for money.

The Portland Walk Campus Submarine Design Sandbox Simulated Environment will be a training variant designed and manufactured to fulfil the Portland Walk Campus Zone A and Zone B High Level and Skills Requirements for all of the functions, roles and tasks planned in the building.

  • Analysing submarine structures through Finite Element Analysis
  • Working alongside other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated system solutions
  • Gathering evidence to demonstrate compliance of these solutions with safety, function and performance requirements
  • Authoring and reviewing design and analysis reports
  • Responding to build issues through collaboration with Operations and Construction Engineering

The Principal Engineer – Structural, will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the following systems, but not limited to:
