Our client is a reputable and growing main contractor based in Barrow-in-Furness, known for delivering high-quality construction projects across maintenance, refurbishment, and new build sectors. With a strong client base in the public, defence, and healthcare sectors, they pride themselves on collaborative and supportive approach within the business and with their clients.

The Opportunity

Due to increased workload and an evolving team dynamic, they are looking to add an Assistant to Intermediate-level Quantity Surveyor / Estimator to their commercial and pre-construction team. This role leans more towards Estimating and offers the chance to work on a wide range of interesting and complex projects, typically ranging from £100K up to £5-6 million in value.

You'll be supported by an experienced team who remain actively involved in commercial delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Help prepare accurate cost estimates for a variety of maintenance, refurbishment, and new build projects.

Assist in compiling and coordinating tenders, ensuring submissions are professional, complete, and timely.

Review and analyse subcontractor quotations and output rates.

Liaise with clients and subcontractors to ensure full understanding of project requirements.

Support the commercial team in managing costs, contracts, and financial reporting where required.

Conduct regular site visits (typically up to 2 times per week) to stay connected with ongoing projects and gather information.

Work closely with the Senior QS and wider pre-construction team.

Utilise Excel as the main estimating software.

Requirements

Degree-qualified or equivalent in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related field.

Some relevant experience within a QS/Estimating role (placement or post-grad considered).

Strong interest and capability in Estimating with a sound grasp of the fundamentals.

Comfortable working with sub-contract quotations and cost breakdowns.

Ability to produce accurate and detailed tender submissions.

Proficient with Excel for estimating and cost analysis.

Strong communication skills, with a collaborative and proactive approach.

Based locally to Barrow-in-Furness or willing to travel to the office and sites as required.
