Overview of the role

The Environmental Health Officer (EHO) will be responsible for enforcing environmental health legislation to protect public health and the environment. This includes monitoring and controlling pollution, investigating statutory nuisances, advising the public and businesses, and providing technical input into licensing and planning processes.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Legal Enforcement & Evidence Gathering:
    Prepare and serve statutory notices, collect evidence for prosecutions, and act as a professional witness in court or tribunal proceedings.
  • Pollution & Nuisance Control:
    Detect, monitor, and abate statutory nuisances and environmental pollution (air, water, noise, and land).
  • Licensing & Planning Support:
    Conduct environmental assessments for licensing and planning applications; attend panels to provide expert advice.
  • Contaminated Land & Sampling Duties:
    Assess contaminated land reports, sample hazardous materials (e.g., asbestos, drinking water), and support private water supply regulation.
  • Technical Advice & Equipment Use:
    Provide guidance to the public and council departments, operate and calibrate monitoring equipment, and support the environmental health team technically and scientifically.
