Environmental Health Officer required!
Salary: 39.50 per hour
Location: Bedford
Hours: Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm
Till December 2025 (will possibility of extension)
Job Purpose
To effectively implement and deliver the reactive and planned workload in relation to Commercial Regulation, focusing on Health & Safety, Licensing & Commercial Noise.
Providing professional advice, in line with appropriate competencies, to local stakeholders and other directorate service areas. To protect and improve the health, safety and well-being of residents, workers, visitors & consumers within the Borough.
Role
Undertake inspections, audits, investigations and other interventions to deliver objectives outlined in the Corporate safety and Commercial Regulation Service Plan, and associated guidance and codes of practice ensuring the Authority delivers its statutory obligations, protecting health, safety & wellbeing of the public, and Bedford Borough Council's employees etc.
Investigate and resolve complaints relating to Health & Safety, Licensing, commercial nuisance and Food Safety, in a timely manner whilst providing expert advice and information and where necessary taking proportionate enforcement action
To protect the health and wellbeing of those residing in, and visiting the Borough, and ensuring business compliance with related regulations.
Provide professional support and advice, in line with appropriate competencies, to the public, local stakeholders and other directorate service areas. to deliver corporate and directorate objectives, and actions contained within the relevant service plan.
Lead in delivering responses to relevant service requests, projects & work streams in line with specialist professional competence to contribute towards the efficient and effective delivery of the Council's statutory functions.
Must have
An accredited Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health. Applicants shall be registered with the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) as a Registered EHP (REnvH) or equivalent.
Experience and detailed understanding relevant to the post, including the commercial aspects of environmental health such as health & safety enforcement, licensing, commercial nuisance, with experience and an ability to take appropriate enforcement action accordingly. Experience in relation to Food Safety would be advantageous but is not essential.
Significant experience of working within a regulatory role, including gathering evidence, delivering formal actions, undertaking complex and specialist/technical work, preparing legal notices, and achieving successful outcomes including prosecutions/licensing reviews.
