Managing Quantity Surveyor - Major Highway Project (Bedford)

Are you an experienced and commercially astute Managing Quantity Surveyor with a strong background in major highway infrastructure projects? Ready to take a leading commercial role on a significant project in the Bedford area?

We are seeking a high-calibre Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial function for a key highway improvement project based in Bedford. You will be responsible for all commercial aspects of the project, ensuring financial control, maximising value, and managing risk throughout the project lifecycle. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a landmark infrastructure scheme.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all commercial and quantity surveying activities for the highway project.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of commercial strategies.
  • Manage and administer the main contract and subcontracts, likely utilising NEC forms of contract.
  • Ensure robust cost planning, forecasting, and detailed monthly CVR reporting.
  • Lead on procurement, negotiation, and management of subcontractor accounts.
  • Identify, assess, and manage commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Prepare, submit, and agree interim valuations and final accounts.
  • Manage and resolve claims and variations in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide expert commercial advice and guidance to the project team.
  • Mentor and develop junior quantity surveying staff within the team.
  • Foster strong working relationships with the client, consultants, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all contractual obligations and company commercial procedures.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven track record as a Managing Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor with demonstrable experience on large-scale civil engineering projects, specifically within the highways sector.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of NEC (New Engineering Contract) forms of contract is essential.
  • Strong commercial acumen with a comprehensive understanding of cost management, contract administration, and procurement.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and motivate a commercial team.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prepare and present detailed commercial reports to senior management.
  • Proficient in relevant quantity surveying and cost management software.
  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related construction field.
  • Professional membership (e.g., RICS, ICES) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines.
