The Drama Department plays a central role in enriching the creative, cultural and expressive life of the school. We are proud of our dynamic and inclusive provision that inspires students from Year 7 through to Year 13. Our approach to drama education is rooted in both tradition and innovation, blending rigorous academic learning with extensive opportunities for practical exploration and performance.

Drama at Burntwood fosters creativity, empathy, confidence, and collaboration. We believe that drama is not just a subject but a powerful tool for personal development and social understanding. Our curriculum encourages students to explore complex issues, historical contexts and diverse cultures through performance, all while developing core transferable skills that support success across the curriculum and beyond.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) students build foundational skills in acting, improvisation, character development and script work. The curriculum gradually introduces theatre history, non-naturalistic styles and key practitioners such as Stanislavski and Brecht. Emphasis is placed on group collaboration, emotional literacy and reflective practice.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11) students undertake a more formal study of drama, combining performance and written analysis. They study set texts (e.g., Macbeth, An Inspector Calls), participate in devising work and review live theatre. GCSE Drama allows students to develop depth in performance technique, contextual understanding, and evaluative writing.
