Smart Education is recruiting for a passionate and experienced Assistant Headteacher to join a specialist ASD provision in Harborne, supporting students aged 11 to 19 years. This is a 12-month maternity cover position starting in September 2025. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role within the school, supporting students with complex needs and contributing to whole-school improvement.

Expectations of the Assistant Headteacher role:

• Provide strategic leadership to drive teaching and learning standards across the school• Support the Headteacher in the day-to-day running of the school and overall school improvement plan• Lead on behaviour management, safeguarding, and student wellbeing, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment• Model outstanding classroom practice and provide coaching and mentoring to staff• Engage effectively with parents, external agencies, and stakeholders to support student outcomes• Contribute to curriculum development and assessment strategies tailored to students with ASD and complex needs

Job Requirements for this Assistant Headteacher role:

• Must hold a valid Child and Adult Enhanced DBS (or be willing to apply for one)• Must have QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)• Previous leadership experience in a special school or SEN setting is essential• Proven track record of working with students with complex needs, including ASD and associated conditions• Strong understanding of safeguarding and statutory responsibilities• Exceptional interpersonal and organisational skills• Ability to inspire, lead and develop staff to achieve their full potential
