Overview

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical engineering works across Network Rail station upgrade projects. This role involves managing the design, assurance, installation, and testing of mechanical systems to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient station environments. The engineer will act as the technical authority for all mechanical elements, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and Network Rail stakeholders.



Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical engineering design and assurance for station upgrade schemes, including ventilation, HVAC, public health, fire systems, drainage, and energy efficiency improvements.

  • Review, develop, and sign off technical documentation such as drawings, specifications, method statements, and ITPs.

  • Ensure all mechanical designs and installations meet Network Rail standards, building regulations, CDM requirements, and industry best practices.

  • Coordinate with civil, electrical, architectural, and systems engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical works within the wider project.

  • Provide technical oversight during construction, including resolving design issues, supporting site teams, and conducting inspections.

  • Manage contractor performance, ensuring quality, programme adherence, and cost control.

  • Attend multidisciplinary design reviews, technical meetings, and site progress briefings.

  • Oversee testing, commissioning, and handover of mechanical systems, ensuring full compliance with Network Rail assurance processes.

  • Contribute to risk assessments, hazard logs, and engineering safety documentation.

  • Mentor junior engineers and support the development of engineering best practices within the project team.



Required Skills & Experience

  • Degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer or equivalent (Chartered or working toward Chartership advantageous).

  • Strong experience delivering mechanical engineering works within rail, infrastructure, or complex building environments.

  • In-depth knowledge of Network Rail standards, LU standards (desirable), and relevant British/European regulations.

  • Demonstrated experience overseeing design, installation, testing, and commissioning.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to lead technical decisions and solve complex engineering challenges.

  • Strong understanding of safety management, CDM regulations, and railway working practices.
