  • This role is for a vocational assessor working with young people who have Special Educational Needs (SEN) in Birmingham.
  • The position offers a starting salary of ÂŁ30,000 for those with a Level 5 teaching qualification, or ÂŁ28,000 for Level 3 holders with strong delivery experience.
  • Candidates are required to have a minimum of 6 months of relevant experience and must be drivers with a flexible approach to teaching and job coaching.
  • The role includes a 4-month supported induction and involves a mix of classroom teaching and on-site support with learners.
  • This is an opportunity to make a real difference in learners' lives by helping them gain confidence and achieve their first job offers.
Feel like you're just ticking boxes? Ready to get back to what made you want to support learners in the first place? If you're a vocational assessor who's starting to feel the weight of paperwork and endless compliance—but still loves working directly with learners—this could be your next move. This isn’t your standard assessing role. You’ll be working with young people who have Special Educational Needs (SEN), helping them take their first steps into paid employment. It’s part classroom, part job coaching, and fully rewarding. You’ll be part of a small and passionate team delivering a supported internship programme based in central Birmingham. There’s a mix of teaching (functional skills and employability) and workplace support. That could mean helping alearner understand a task on a hospital ward one day, and then adapting a classroom session the next to build their confidence or close a skills gap you’ve seen. What’s different about this role? You’re not assessing to a framework—you’re supporting real progress in real time. You’ll see the difference you’re making every single day, whether it’s a young person mastering a new task, building confidence, or finally getting their first job offer. You'll start with a 4-month supported induction, shadowing the current tutor across the week. That usually looks like:
  • 1 day in the classroom
  • 3 days on-site with learners at a local hospital
  • 1 day for planning and prep
You’ll be working with a small cohort (6–10 learners), and every learner’s journey is slightly different—which is where your practical, adaptable approach will shine. What do you need?
  • If you’ve got a Level 5 teaching qualification (like QTS, PGCE, DTLLS) from any background, you’re good to go (starting salary at ÂŁ30k)
  • Or if you’re at Level 3 (AET/PTLLS) and have strong delivery experience (especially in functional skills), that’s fine too—the charity will support you to gain your Level 5 after 6 months (starting salary at ÂŁ28k)
You must be a driver and be flexible—the balance of teaching and job coaching can shift slightly depending on which employer programmes you’re working with each year (but it always follows the DFN Project Search supported internship model).Sound like the change you’ve been waiting for?Apply through this advert.
