SEN Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join our supportive team at a vibrant primary school. This role focuses on assisting a non-verbal student who requires intensive interaction and support with sensory and developmental activities. The ideal candidate will have a compassionate approach and a strong understanding of the needs of children with special educational requirements.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Provide one-to-one support to a non-verbal student, focusing on intensive interaction techniques and the use of objects of reference to aid communication.
- Support the student’s developmental needs, working within the frameworks of developmental journal step 5 with a particular focus on physical development at step 8.
- Engage the student in sensory activities that they enjoy, such as water play and exploring various textures, to facilitate learning and sensory satisfaction.
- Implement strategies to manage and redirect pica behaviours, ensuring the student's safety by closely monitoring and preventing the ingestion of non-food items.
- Assist with daily care needs, including nappy changes and promoting hygiene.
- Help develop the student’s independent skills at a pace suited to their individual capabilities.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to implement an effective educational plan that meets the student’s needs.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience working with children with special educational needs, particularly non-verbal and sensory-focused children.
- Understanding of developmental milestones and experience in implementing educational and behavioural strategies.
- Patience, resilience, and a genuine passion for supporting children with special educational needs.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with children, staff, and parents.
- A relevant teaching assistant or childcare qualification is preferred.
