The Opportunity: We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly proficient Level 2 Braille Specialist 1:1 Learning Support Assistant to join our dedicated SEND team. This crucial role involves providing direct, individualised support to a visually impaired student within our mainstream secondary setting. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the student can fully access the curriculum, participate in school life, and develop their independence.

Key Responsibilities of the Braille 1:1 Support Role:

  • Provide expert 1:1 Braille transcription and support for a visually impaired student across various subjects.
  • Produce and adapt learning materials into appropriate Braille formats (e.g., literary Braille, Nemeth for Maths, Music Braille if applicable).
  • Support the student in developing their Braille reading, writing, and tactile skills.
  • Assist the student with the use of specialist assisted technology (e.g., Braille notetakers, screen readers, magnifiers).
  • Facilitate the student's independent learning and participation in classroom activities.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO, and other support staff to develop and implement effective individualised learning plans (EHCPs).
  • Provide guidance and support to the student for mobility and navigating the school environment safely.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and support provided.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, promoting the student's self-esteem and confidence.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Essential: Proven proficiency in Braille to Level 2 certification (e.g., UKAAF Braille Competency Certificate).
  • Experience working with visually impaired children or young people, preferably in a secondary school setting.
  • A strong understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), particularly visual impairment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting student development.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and adapting to individual student needs.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and a commitment to promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Relevant qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3).
  • Experience with specific assisted technologies used by visually impaired individuals.
