An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated and forward-thinking Enhanced Practitioner – Mammography (Band 7) to join our Breast Screening & Imaging Department within the Diagnostic & Support Services Division. This role is central to the delivery of a high-quality, patient-focused breast imaging service across Bolton, Bury and Rochdale, supporting both the NHS Breast Screening Programme and symptomatic breast services.

About the Service

Our team vision is to provide a safe, effective and efficient breast imaging and diagnostic service, supporting seamless patient pathways and delivering the highest standards of care. The service operates across four static sites: Royal Bolton Hospital Breast Unit, Radcliffe (Bury), Nye Bevan House (Rochdale) and Bolton One Breast Screening Unit. You will work as part of a well-established multidisciplinary team (MDT), including radiologists, surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, mammographers, assistant practitioners and radiology assistants.

The Role

As a Band 7 Enhanced Practitioner, you will undertake advanced mammography practice, working autonomously within your defined scope while contributing to multidisciplinary decision-making. You will participate in symptomatic and assessment clinics, MDT/MDM meetings, and take responsibility for your own clinical decisions, professional development and contribution to service quality.

You will be recognised as a source of expertise in mammography and advanced breast imaging practice, supporting clinical governance, quality assurance, education and service development. The post holder will also play a key role in supervision, mentorship and leadership of junior staff, students and trainees.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver a high-quality, timely and efficient breast imaging service, including screening, symptomatic and specialised assessment mammography across multiple sites.

Work as an autonomous practitioner, ensuring optimal image quality using the lowest achievable radiation dose, in line with IR(ME)R and departmental protocols.

Undertake advanced practice activities at Master’s level in one or more of the following areas:

    • Image Interpretation & Reporting
    • X-ray Guided Breast Interventional Techniques
    • Breast Ultrasound & Interventional Techniques

Participate in MDT and multidisciplinary arbitration meetings, contributing to patient management and decision-making.

Act as an operator and practitioner under IR(ME)R, including justification and authorisation of imaging referrals.

Identify suspicious clinical or imaging abnormalities and understand their implications for patient care.

Coordinate assessment and results clinics to ensure smooth patient flow and effective multidisciplinary collaboration.

Maintain and contribute to robust Quality Control and Quality Management Systems (QMS/QPulse) in line with NHS Breast Screening Programme standards.

Supervise, support and mentor mammographers, assistant practitioners, radiology assistants and student radiographers.

Contribute to service improvement through audit, research, clinical governance activities and evidence-based practice.

Manage risk, incidents and local complaints within your specialist area, escalating appropriately when required.

Communication and Patient Care

You will demonstrate highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, supporting women and patients who may be anxious, distressed or emotionally vulnerable. You will ensure informed consent is obtained, after-care advice is given, and information is communicated sensitively, clearly and effectively to patients, relatives and colleagues.

Education, Leadership and Development

The role includes a strong educational and leadership component. You will contribute to staff training, mentorship of reporting trainees, delivery of CPD and educational sessions, and support recruitment, induction and preceptorship. You will also actively engage in your own continuing professional development, maintaining a professional portfolio and participating in national audits such as PERFORMS.
