Your new role

We need 2 Rangers, one on a full-time 35-hour contract and the other on a 28-hour contract.

The role of the Town Ranger is to provide a visible, approachable, uniformed presence on the streets, and to act as the eyes and ears of the company, dealing directly with a defined range of issues and escalating and reporting any unusual activity to the appropriate authority. A major part of the role involves acting as a welcome host for visitors and customers of the member businesses. Key Tasks:-

  • To monitor the area from the streets.
  • To welcome and nurture visitors and shoppers to the town centre.
  • To develop relationships with businesses in the area to better understand the range and breadth of opportunities available to the visitor and thereby to become an ambassador for the town and what it offers.
  • To monitor the town centre area for possible undesirable incidents, therefore ensuring visitors and shoppers feel safe and secure whilst in the area.
  • To identify and report to the CCTV room any issues that cannot be resolved immediately without further intervention.
  • To identify and escalate any situations that cannot be resolved to the relevant authority (Council, CSAS, PCSO or Police) and continue to monitor escalated issues until appropriate actions have been taken.
  • To maintain timely and accurate records of incidents and issues arising.
  • To provide support with identification of known trouble-makers to the CCTV room, Police, PCSO's, CSAS and, if relevant, businesses.
  • To act as a champion of Bournemouth town centre.
  • It is expected that over a period of time, the job holder will develop strong working relationships with visitors to the town, local businesses, the police, council employees and colleagues in the CCTV room.

What you'll need to succeed

You will ideally have previous experience of a face-to-face customer contact role. You will have experience of working in a team and have knowledge of Bournemouth town centre.

  • You should be physically fit and able to walk as much as 8 miles a day whilst carrying belt-mounted equipment.
  • Contracted hours will be 35 hours per week across 5 days on a shift basis. Some weekend working will be required.
  • The contract is a fixed term terminating at the end of the current term in 2027, with offer to extend depending on successful renewal ballot 2027 - 2032.
  • The role will be based in the Bournemouth Town Centre BID area.
  • You must be prepared to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Applicants will be vetted by the standard DBS checking procedure.
