Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and professional Bereavement Care Assistant to join our dedicated team. This role is integral to providing a high-quality, responsive bereavement service that meets the needs of the bereaved while adhering to the Charter for the Bereaved. You will play a key role in ensuring the dignified and efficient transfer and cremation of human remains, as well as supporting ceremony services and memorial activities.

This is a full-time position, working Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, totaling 37 hours per week, with a competitive hourly rate of £13.69 per hour.

Responsibilities

As a Bereavement Care Assistant, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Safely transferring coffins between bereavement sites using the in-house conveyancing vehicle.
  • Maintaining the conveyancing vehicle, ensuring it is clean, refueled, and in safe working condition.
  • Assisting with ceremony services, including preparing ceremony spaces, operating digital tribute systems, and guiding attendees.
  • Conducting communal and witness scatters of cremated remains in designated memorial grounds.
  • Supporting the safe operation of the crematory, including the handling and processing of cremated remains.
  • Performing cleaning duties in ceremony spaces, public areas, and memorial grounds.
  • Carrying out low-level maintenance and groundskeeping tasks as required.
  • Providing exceptional customer service to the bereaved, funeral directors, and other service users.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A full and clean UK driving licence (Category B).
  • At least one year of experience driving a light van (up to 3.5 tonnes).
  • The ability to lift up to 50kg and manoeuvre weights of up to 190kg using approved lifting aids.
  • Knowledge of the funeral or bereavement trade (desirable).

Day-to-Day

Your typical day will involve:

  • Transporting coffins between sites and ensuring the conveyancing vehicle is maintained to a high standard.
  • Preparing ceremony spaces and assisting with services, including operating tribute systems and managing attendees.
  • Handling cremated remains, including conducting witness and communal scatters.
  • Performing cleaning and maintenance tasks in ceremony spaces, public areas, and memorial grounds.
  • Collaborating with team members to ensure the smooth operation of bereavement services.
