Nottage Timber and Joinery is a well-established timber merchant and joinery manufacturer with a proud history of delivering high-quality products to trade and retail customers across South Wales and beyond. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a meticulous and experienced General Ledger Accountant to join our finance team and help maintain the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of our financial records.

Duties and responsibilities

The General Ledger Accountant will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of all general ledger transactions, reconciling accounts, preparing financial statements, and supporting month-end and year-end closing activities. This role is critical in providing accurate financial data to support business decisions and maintain compliance with relevant accounting standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with UK accounting standards.
  • Manage accruals, prepayments, journal entries, and fixed asset registers.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
  • Support the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Liaise with auditors, providing documentation and explanations as required.
  • Ensure compliance with HMRC requirements, including VAT returns and other statutory filings.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate coding and allocation of costs.
  • Monitor and analyse financial data, providing variance analysis and management reports.
  • Support process improvements in the finance function to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Experience and qualificationsSkills & Experience Required
  • Part-qualified or qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) preferred; relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Proven experience in a similar general ledger, financial accounting, or bookkeeping role.
  • Strong knowledge of UK GAAP and relevant financial regulations.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (experience with ERP systems advantageous) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
