Job Title: Chemical Safety and CoSHH Advisor

Overview
The Chemical Safety and CoSHH Advisor will provide expert technical advice on the management of chemicals to support safety, health, fire, environmental protection, and emergency preparedness on a large, complex construction site. This includes coaching contract partners, managing chemical inventories, supporting transition to COMAH compliance, and ensuring appropriate emergency response measures are in place.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide chemical safety and CoSHH advice across health, safety, fire, environment, and emergency response teams.

  • Manage and assure the sites chemical inventory in line with regulatory requirements, including COMAH.

  • Develop arrangements for safe chemical storage and COMAH site operations.

  • Review and assess contractor chemical use proposals, consulting with subject matter experts as needed.

  • Coach contract partners to meet high chemical safety standards.

  • Identify hazards requiring further mitigation or response and advise stakeholders.

  • Support the development and implementation of an improved chemical management system.

  • Assist with chemical risk assessments and mitigation strategies.

  • Promote a Chemical Management Community of Best Practice.

Reporting Line
Reports to the Site Environmental Engineering Lead. Operates with a high degree of autonomy, within established policy frameworks.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Strong instructional and presentation abilities; effective oral and written communication.

  • Resilient and confident under pressure.

  • Collaborative, with the ability to build effective networks.

  • Organised and systematic in applying safety information.

  • Capable of offering both strategic and tactical advice tailored to stakeholder needs.

  • Good at managing multiple tasks and working independently.

  • In-depth understanding of chemical hazards and interactions.

  • Knowledge of chemical safety regulations and best practices.

Desirable

  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication abilities.

  • Self-motivated with effective workload management.

  • Capable of constructive challenge and building strong stakeholder relationships.

  • Familiar with workflow tools, PowerBI, and GIS.

  • Experience in HAZMAT spill and environmental emergency response.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent in chemistry or related field.

  • Formal training in chemical risk assessment (minimum P304).

  • Experience managing chemicals on active, complex sites.

Desirable

  • Experience in construction environments.

  • Knowledge of waste classification and hazardous waste management.

  • Understanding of environmental management and toxicology.

  • Experience conducting DSEAR assessments.

  • Familiarity with process safety principles.
