- Project Leadership: Drive the successful delivery of high-value, high-risk capital construction projects that are critical to Bristol’s strategic infrastructure and community development.
- Project Planning & Execution: Shape and maintain robust, detailed project plans that map out milestones, deliverables, timelines, and resource allocation. Monitor progress continuously and adjust plans proactively.
- Budget & Financial Management: Oversee large project budgets in line with the local authorities’ financial procedures. Track and forecast expenditure, manage financial risks, and address variances to keep projects on budget.
- Team Management & Development: Lead and motivate cross-functional project teams. Identify internal skill requirements, procure external expertise where necessary, and provide clear direction, performance monitoring, and development opportunities.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders (e.g. council departments, legal, finance), elected members, external contractors, consultants, and the local community. Communicate clearly and regularly to ensure alignment and resolve any issues.
- Risk & Issue Management: Identify potential risks early and develop effective mitigation and contingency strategies. Maintain risk registers and act quickly to manage emerging issues.
- Governance & Reporting: Ensure projects are managed in accordance with local authorities’ governance frameworks. Prepare and present clear project documentation, reports, and dashboards to senior leaders and stakeholders.
- Sustainability & Compliance: Ensure projects meet environmental, health & safety, equalities, and legal standards. Promote sustainability and inclusion at every stage of delivery.
- Continuous Improvement: Capture lessons learned and contribute to the evolution of project management best practices across the council.
- Proven Project Management Expertise: Demonstrable experience in leading the end-to-end delivery of complex, multi-million-pound construction projects, ideally within a local authority or public-sector environment.
- Technical & Industry Knowledge: A deep understanding of construction processes, procurement practices (including NEC or JCT contracts), project lifecycle planning, and infrastructure delivery.
- Strong Leadership Skills: Ability to inspire, direct, and develop high-performing multidisciplinary teams, including external consultants and contractors.
- Exceptional Organisational Skills: Skilled at handling multiple projects simultaneously, balancing competing priorities, and delivering to deadlines under pressure.
- Excellent Communication & Stakeholder Management: Confident engaging with senior leaders, political stakeholders, contractors, and local communities. Capable of translating complex technical information into clear, actionable insights.
