Join Holtec Britain, a member of the Holtec International family; a global leader in designing an unconditionally safe and secure source of clean energy. Holtec has received funding from the FNEF to advance its SMR programme, and is building its brand new team based in Bristol.

As the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be entrusted with overseeing and managing a team of mechanical design engineers responsible for the development of mechanical and structural components crucial to the SMR-300 plant. Your role will encompass defining the approach to deliver the SMR-300 mechanical design, ensuring adherence to safety standards, supporting development of the safety case, and fostering a collaborative environment conducive to innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide line management and coordinate the team, being responsible for coaching and mentoring to develop the team and individuals in technical skills and personal skills enabling them to deliver.
  • Manage and lead mechanical design activities, including CAD design, design for manufacturability, engineering analyses, and technical documentation.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal and external organizations, including nuclear regulators.
  • Interact with regulators to explain safety cases and supporting substantiation.
  • Support team development, participating in interviews.
  • Demonstrating that required codes and standards are met.
  • Leading required design change management activity and where required working on design solutions through critical thinking, research, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and suppliers.
  • Oversee the creation of technical documentation and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Support the preparation of design deliverables and presentations, and effectively communicate design progress in stakeholder meetings.
  • Facilitate the development of engineering and safety case requirements and documentation for nuclear systems and components.
  • Actively engage in project-driven engineering teams, providing leadership and expertise in mechanical design.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline.
  • Proven experience in mechanical engineering design, including requirements capture, design solution generation, and technical report writing.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Experience in design change management, configuration control and requirements management.
  • Ability to work independently and balance competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage credibly both internally and externally.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills - able to present at multiple organisational levels and to external regulatory stakeholders.
  • A credible decision-maker, able to create confidence through crafting strong justifications and arguments.
  • Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810.

Previous experience in the design and fabrication of products such as heat exchangers, piping valves, pumps, and ASME components in commercial nuclear or naval nuclear design would be an advantage.
