Digital Signal Processing Engineer

Location: Bristol (full-time, on-site)
Salary: Competitive + bonus + excellent benefits

An opportunity to join a leading UK sensing technology company, working on real-world signal processing challenges.

A specialist developer of fibre optic sensing systems is seeking a Research Scientist/Engineer to join their growing R&D team in Bristol.

This is a rare opportunity for an early-career engineer or physicist with a strong academic background to apply advanced signal processing skills to real-world problems, working closely with experienced mentors in a hands-on development environment.

About the Role

You’ll work alongside a small, dynamic team solving real-world detection and classification challenges in the time and frequency domains. Core activities include developing signal processing algorithms in Python, running experiments in the lab, and translating mathematical insights into tangible product improvements.

The work is close to both hardware and deployment realities — offering the chance to see your research applied directly to operational systems.

What They’re Looking For

  • A strong academic background in physics, electronics, or a related field (MSc, PhD, or equivalent)
  • Excellent grasp of graduate-level mathematics and signal processing techniques
  • Strong proficiency in Python for data analysis and modelling (MATLAB is not used)
  • Practical mindset: comfortable running experiments, testing, and hands-on learning
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation and collaboration

Prior experience with fibre optics is not required — candidates from wireless, audio, radar, or other signal processing backgrounds are very welcome.

What’s on Offer

  • Work closely with highly experienced engineers and scientists passionate about mentoring and developing talent
  • A genuine opportunity to deepen your skills in a technically challenging, commercially impactful environment
  • 5 days per week on-site initially to enable rapid development; flexible working possible once established
  • A friendly, informal working environment in a beautifully converted historic building with parking, EV charging, a gym, and easy access to Bristol and the M5

Benefits include:
Pension contribution, profit-related bonus, private health and dental plan, 25 days holiday, life insurance/critical illness cover, and more.

Why Consider This Role?

This is an ideal position for someone who values learning, technical depth, and the satisfaction of seeing their work move quickly into real-world applications. If you want to apply serious mathematical and engineering thinking to challenging sensing problems — and work somewhere that genuinely invests in your development — this could be the right next step.
