PURPOSE OF ROLE

 We are working on behalf of a well-established insurance provider to appoint a Senior Regional Underwriter to their regional team based in Bristol.

This is a key hire aimed at strengthening underwriting capability across the region, with a specific focus on Property and Liability products. The role plays a vital part in driving profitable growth, enhancing broker relationships, and supporting the wider regional strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and manage long-term relationships with a defined broker panel to drive new and profitable business
  • Underwrite complex and high-value risks, maintaining high standards of technical accuracy and governance
  • Support the development and execution of the regional business plan through effective risk selection and pricing strategies
  • Act as a technical referral point for junior underwriters, supporting capability development across the region
  • Partner with the Regional Management team to shape and grow the distribution footprint, targeting strategic brokers and accounts
  • Ensure compliance with internal underwriting standards and risk frameworks while remaining commercially agile

DAY-TO-DAY 

  • Engage regularly with brokers across the region to support new and existing business
  • Review and assess complex underwriting submissions, ensuring technical accuracy and alignment with risk appetite
  • Liaise with brokers on live cases, providing guidance and negotiating terms
  • Participate in regional strategy meetings, contributing insights to shape business direction
  • Provide mentorship and support to junior underwriters, helping build team capability
  • Combine independent decision-making with team collaboration and stakeholder interaction

EXPERIENCE 

  • Proven background in underwriting within the commercial insurance market, ideally with a focus on Commercial products
  • Experience working with regional broker networks and delivering underwriting results in line with financial targets
  • Strong track record of underwriting complex and non-standard risks, with demonstrable commercial awareness
  • Previous involvement in supporting or mentoring junior underwriting staff is desirable

SKILLS 

  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with a commercial mindset
  • Excellent relationship-building capabilities and broker engagement experience
  • Confident, considered decision-maker with sound risk assessment skills
  • Technically proficient, with a clear understanding of governance, risk, and underwriting standards
