Role: 6x Mechanical Marine Systems Engineering Specialists – Handling & Replenishment, Access & Egress Systems

Location: Remote with an occasional visit to site in Bristol (2x per month)

Type: We would consider contractors, but permanent staff is preferred

Salary: £35,000 - £80,000 depending on Level (bandings below)

· £35,000 - £45,000 5 years plus

· £42,000 - £60,000 is senior

· £60,000 + is principal + leadership

We're seeking a Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) Marine Systems Engineer to provide specialist support for Surface Ship and Submarine Handling & Replenishment, Access & Egress Systems. This is focused on developing and delivering engineering artefacts and post-design support to ensure operational safety, reliability, and sustainability.

The position requires consistent development and delivery of clear, complete, and compliant technical engineering outputs.

Key Responsibilities:

The role encompasses a wide range of engineering tasks and specific platform support.

General Engineering Support :

  • Issue Resolution & Technical Queries: Respond to technical queries, provide SME advice in meetings, and implement simple, non-complex engineering solutions.
  • System Maintenance & Operational Safety: Resolve issues with moderate impact on operational safety, conduct longer-duration investigations, and implement engineering solutions to address significant fleet equipment issues.
  • Design Change & Major Defect Investigation: Resolve high-priority safety issues, support Design Change Introduction, and conduct complex defect investigations for major system malfunction, cyber-attack, or serious harm potential.
  • Obsolescence & Through-Life Support: Conduct obsolescence investigations, develop mitigation plans, and provide through-life support, including the review and amendment of technical documents.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Consistently develop and deliver technical engineering artefacts, maintain a Lessons Learned log, and provide weekly and monthly progress reports with task forecasts.

Specific Tasks:

  • Obsolescence Mitigation: Develop and implement engineering solutions to mitigate obsolescence risks for the Highly Mechanised Weapon Handling System to ensure continued platform capability.
  • Risk to Life Resolution: Address all Category B Risk to Life issues, delivering an evidence summary of completed artefacts.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

The Specialist Support Service must be delivered by Suitably Qualified and

Experienced Personnel meeting the following criteria:

  • Recent Marine Engineering Experience: Demonstrated experience (within the last 5 years) in Marine Engineering.
  • Mechanical Systems Expertise: Demonstrated experience (within the last 5 years) in Mechanical Systems Engineering and Systems Technical Authority roles, including mitigating Operational Defects.
  • Naval Environment Experience: Demonstrated recent experience (within the last 5 years) with design, production, and operational activities within a Naval environment.
  • Education and Professional Status:
  • Degree qualified in an Engineering discipline (Or equivalent experience).
  • Possession of Chartered status (registered to a recognised accredited Engineering Institution) is preferred. In the absence of Chartership, evidence of successful delivery of Engineering and Technical Service Provision is required.

Work Location and Logistics:

  • Primary Location: Bristol but will consider remote.
  • Exclusion: No activities are expected to require attendance on ships or submarines.
  • System Knowledge: Knowledge of the following systems will be useful; UMMS, SSDD, MCWE, Rosetta, Trilogy View, and FOUNDRY/KRAKEN.

Contract Deliverables and Acceptance:

  • Reporting: Weekly and Monthly Progress Reports detailing completed tasks, complexity breakdown, forecasts, and knowledge transfer information.
  • Performance: Performance will be managed based on the timely delivery and acceptance of the Monthly Progress Report. Late delivery of required deliverables will result in performance deductions (up to 80% for significant delays).
